After Lucrecia gave birth to Sephiroth Vincent didn't care anymore so he locked himself in a coffin and has stayed their for many years. (Nobody knows wether he locked himself in the coffin or whether he was locked in the by hojo. But I think He locked himself in there to protect society from himself).
