Do It Yourself:
European 4-in-1

European 4-in-1 is the basic weave used for armour of many types.  Whether that be a Hauberk (shirt) a Coif (head armour), gauntlets, chauses (legs) or what have you.

The weave begins with a single open ring and four closed rings.

Place the four closed rings on the open ring, then close the center ring.

To continue the row, add an open ring to the last 2 rings, then add 2 more rings to the open ring that you just added.

Continue in this way until you have a row the length that you desire.
To add a row (really 2 rows of rings), run an open ring through the first two rings on the bottom row, adding 2 rings onto the open ring you just added.  This is the beginning of the 3rd row of maille.

To continue this row, add more open rings and ONE closed ring.

Continue like this until you have a piece of maille the size that you wish

This Patch of maille is simple 4-in-1, no expansion rings.  Specifically, the beginning of a vest that I've been commissioned to create.  This particular patch is made from 14 gauge Galvanized Steel, and has a little over 1500 rings.  Including time for coiling and cutting, this piece has taken about 3 days (The entire patch is not shown).
