Vermont Icelandic Riding Club 2000 Summer Show Class List

Note: Descriptions of class levels (i.e. Beginner, Intermediate, etc.) are on a different link.

- Youth Trail Class: Young riders will follow one of the adults through a course of basic obstacles at a walk, three at a time. They will be judged on their ability to control their horse.

- Obstacle Course: Using the same obstacles that appeared in the Youth Trail Class, riders will now complete this course for time and accuracy. It will involve precision turning, a small jump, a sound board, and control through other obstacles at fastest possible speed.

- Toelt Advanced (T.1): Riders compete individually. Begin at the middle of the short side of the ring and ride one round of the ring in working tempo (slow) toelt on either rein. Return to walk at the middle of the short side and change rein. From the middle of the short side ride one round of the ring in working tempo toelt, lengthening stride distinctly on the long sides. (slow on short sides and medium to fast on long sides). From the middle of the short side ride one round (in the same direction) in extended tempo (fast) toelt. Horses will stop before the middle of the long side of the ring and leave the ring at a walk. Top 5 scoring riders will move on to finals[if there are more than 6 entrants].

- Toelt Intermediate 1: Riders compete individually. Begin at the middle of the short side of the ring and ride one round of the ring in working tempo (slow) toelt on either rein. Return to walk at the middle of the short side and change rein. From the middle of the short side ride one round of the ring in working tempo toelt, lengthening stride distinctly on the long sides. (slow on short sides and medium to fast on long sides). Horses will stop on the short side of the ring and leave the ring at a walk. Top 3 scoring riders will move on to combined intermediate finals.

- Toelt Intermediate 2: Same format as Toelt Intermediate 1. Less difficult level. Top 3 scoring riders move on to combined intermediate finals with Intermediate 1 class.

- Toelt Intermediate Combined Finals:

- Toelt Beginner: Three horses will enter the ring at a time. On speakers command, they will begin toelting - slow to medium speed - for one round. On speakers command they will slow to walk, turn around, and toelt (again slow to medium) in the other direction about one round. They will then walk when asked to do so, and leave the ring at a walk.

- Loose-Rein Toelt (T.2): Riders will enter the ring three or four at a time, grouped according to preferred direction. Entering at walk, riders will spread out across the ring. Changing on the judges command, they will complete three rounds: 1. round of toelt (any tempo), 2. slow, steady and calm tempo toelt, returning to walk and change rein, 3. working (slow) to medium tempo toelt, holding both reins in one hand clearly showing no contact with the horses mouth. Marks for section 3 will be doubled. Top 5 scoring riders will move on to the finals.

- T.2 Finals:

- Classic Toelt: Riders will complete two rounds of slow, easy toelt. One in either direction. You will be judged on horse and rider teams who are in easiest and clearest harmony. No aids of any kind will be allowed. This includes weights, bell boots, and whips.

- “Elimination” Toelt: All riders will enter the ring together and spread out along the rail. On the judge’s command, they will begin toelt. Judge may ask for both tempo and direction changes in toelt at their discretion. Rider’s will be “eliminated” as they show faults and asked to come into the center of the ring. The last remaining horse wins.

- Jack Benny: 55 and older riders. Riders will enter the ring 4 at a time at the walk. On the speakers command, they will begin one round of slow toelt. Then, on command, they will change direction, toelting slow to medium speed, and walk on command. Riders will leave the ring at a walk.

- Pole Bending: a pattern will be posted at the registration table the day of the event. Riders must follow the pattern around the poles, and will be timed. Riders who fail to follow the pattern will be disqualified. Fastest overall times win.

- 5-Gait (F.1): Riders compete individually.The test can be ridden on either rein (Direction will remain the same throughout). The riders has four and a half rounds at his disposal to show the following gaits in any order: 1. Working to medium tempo toelt, 2. working to medium tempo trot, 3. medium walk, 4. working to medium tempo canter, 5. racing pace. Riders will then stop before the middle of the long side of the ring and leave the ring at a walk. Each gait may be shown only once, walk for half a round and the other gaits for one round. The racing pace is shown on the long sides only. The marks for toelt and pace will be doubled.

- F.1 Finals:

- 4-Gait Advanced (V.1): Riders compete individually.The test can be ridden on either rein (Direction will remain the same throughout). The riders has four and a half rounds at his disposal to show the following gaits in any order: 1. Working tempo toelt, 2. working to medium tempo trot, 3. medium walk, 4. working to medium tempo canter, 5. extended tempo toelt. Riders will then stop before the middle of the long side of the ring and leave the ring at a walk. Each gait may be shown only once, walk for half a round and the other gaits for one round.

- V.1 Finals:

- 4-Gait Intermediate 1: Riders compete individually.The test can be ridden on either rein (Direction will remain the same throughout). The riders has three and a half rounds at his disposal to show the following gaits in any order: 1. Working to medium tempo toelt, 2. working to medium tempo trot, 3. medium walk, 4. working to medium tempo canter. Riders will then stop before the middle of the long side of the ring and leave the ring at a walk. Each gait may be shown only once, walk for half a round and the other gaits for one round. Top 3 scoring riders will move on to combined intermediate finals.

- 4-Gait Intermediate 2: Same format as 4-Gait Intermediate 1. Less difficult level. top 3 scoring riders move on to combined intermediate finals with Intermediate 1 class.

- 4-Gait Intermediate Combined Finals:

- 3,4-Gait Youth: (Riders aged 14 and under)Two or Three horses will enter the ring at a time. Judges will ask riders to walk, trot, toelt, and canter. Riders must show at least three gaits of the four. If they show only three, they will be scored on these three. If they show four, the lowest of their four scores will be thrown out and they will be judged on their three best scores.

- “3 from 5” Beginner: Up to 4 horses will enter the ring at a time. Judges will ask riders to walk, trot, toelt, and canter. Then each rider will be asked to show a “fast gait” of their choice - trot, gallop, or pace - while the other riders wait outside the ring. The two lowest scores of the 5 will be eliminated, and the rider will be judged on their three best scores.

- Beer Toelt: Riders will be handed a mug of beer as they enter the ring. All riders will enter together. All will toelt around the ring at varying speeds until they are signaled to stop. Riders will be judged on the amount of beer left in their mugs at the end of their ride. Riders not toelting will be eliminated. After the amount of beer is measured, riders will then all drink the remaining beer in their mugs (optional).

- Bareback Sit-A-Buck: All riders will enter the ring together. Spreading out around the ring, they will each have a dollar bill placed underneath them. They will then begin to make their way around the ring at progressively faster speeds until a winner is determined by the last dollar still intact.

- Trot Race: Two horses will enter the ring at a time. At a start/finish line, both horses will begin trotting at starter’s command. Two Time keepers at the start/finish line will time the horses. The judge(s) will watch for gait faults. Horses that fall for three or more steps into any other gait but trot will be disqualified. A horse can enter not more than two heats. If a horse races in more than one heat, the slower time will be discounted. Fastest time overall wins.

- Costume Class: All Entrants will enter the ring and circle it first at a walk. All riders and horses must be in some type of costume. On speakers command, all horses will stop and change direction. Horse and rider will be judged on most original and appealing costume.

- Freestyle Dressage (FS.1): Number of elements minimum 10, maximum 14. The program of the test shall be created by the rider. The test is to be submitted in writing before the start of the competition to the competition secretary (Jill Merkel). Minimum demands : medium walk, toelt, working or medium tempo canter, transitions of the gaits and tempo, chamge of rein, bending, halt, salute. Possible elements besides the minimum demands: trot, leg yeilding or shoulder in, rein back, turn on haunches, change of canter via walk trot or toelt. Any test element will only be rated once per rein. The salute is the exception. Suitable music is to be provided by the rider on cassette [or CD]. More than one cassette [or more than one CD] is only allowed when a representative of the rider is available to play the music in the right order on the equiptment provided by the organizer of the competition.

* Stefan Sigurdsson Award - Classic Toelt
* Horsemanship

(Winners will receive specialty ribbons and have their names engraved on perpetual trophies which will remain with the Club.)

will be awarded for the highest scores.
