What is Goth?
Introduction
What is Goth? Well, it's all a matter of
opinion. Everyone has different views,
especially on the subject of Gothism. But, if everyone believes something different, who is right? That's also a matter of
opinion.
Views of Society
Some people have never even heard of the term "Goth." Some people are so closed-minded that they have their own views and refuse to
listen to any other definitions. Some people
will listen to whatever you have to say on
the subject and try to understand. And some
people really don't care.
Some believe it has to do with devil
worshipping and witchcraft and such. These are those who refuse to believe what others have
to say or they just haven't heard
differently. They think that we must be evil
if we look evil. Personally, I don't really
like these people.
Some believe it is people who dress in all
black, have pale skin, listen to heavy music, wear black make-up, and lurk in graveyards
(which is true for the most of us, but this
definition is so general).
Some believe it is a, shall I say,
"victorian" type of lifestyle, or "Toreador." They believe we are art freaks, obsessed with beauty and harmony (very few believe this
might I add). They believe we are poets,
artists, actors/actresses, and writers (I,
for one, am all of the above, but again, this definition is rather general).
Some believe us to be arrogant, closed-minded, self-centered, FREAKS. I do know a few of these actually. This is yet another generalized definition. I know a few of these who aren't Goth. I'm sure we all do.
Many different people believe many different things. There are so many definitions and it would take a lifetime for me to define them all.
My Views
My beliefs and views are unique just like
everyone else's. I believe Goths are just
another kind of people, like "Preps,"
"Jocks," "Dorks," and "Yos." We do our own
thing just like they do. We're human beings
too. Sure we dress in black, but doesn't
everyone have their own style? You won't ever catch me wearing Tommy Hilfiger or Nautica.
That's not me.
Goths, to me, can have any religion they
chose. Goths don't all worship one specific
thing or being. We're free with our choices
on religion. Personally, I'm Christian. Some
people don't believe there could possibly be
a Christian Goth, but here I am (A Christian
Goth... who'da thunk it).
I believe Goths are artists at heart and love to express themselves any way possible. They are artists, poets, writers,
actors/actresses, photographers, musicians,
etc,etc,etc. Besides expressing ourselves
with our talents, we express ourselves with
the clothes we wear and the music we listen
to (just like everybody else). A lot of us
are art fans and always enjoy a quiet evening at a coffee shop sipping a cappuccino and
reading the latest poetry anthology (that
would be so nice right about now).
Some of us are constantly searching for the many splendors life has to offer and trying
to find the beauty that lives in everything.
I believe we are the most likely to live life to it's fullest and learn to appreciate
everything around us. We love watching
sunsets, listening to the wind in the trees,
and walking barefoot after it rains just to
feel the cool damp grass tickle our toes
(I'm not saying we're the only ones who do this but it just goes to show that we're a lot like many of the, so called, "normal" people).
Conclusion
Everybody's different. It's as simple as
that. We're all the same, being that we are
all different. People are afraid of what they don't understand. When your afraid of
something, you're more than likely NOT going
to try and understand it. We are just highly
misunderstood. If you want to know what Goth
is, ask one of us. We'll only bite if you
want us to. Thanks for your time. Have a nice life.
