Disclaimer: I do not own any of these characters, I won't make any money off of this story, and all I am doing is providing some entertainment for myself and whoever else wants to read this.
Summary: Read the first part of this series to understand. It is a Joey/Pacey story with a little Dawson/Jen to pass the time.
Notes: Writing this has been an ordeal and a half, so if you have any feedback, please be kind. My email is Calie15@aol.com . I hope you like it. Thoughts and actions are in parentheses. Dawson and Jen are still together, and Joey still has the hots for Dawson.
(Joey looked up at the sun. It was making her so tired. She couldn't even get up. She resolved that she was not going to let this fever get the best of her. No one will know how sick she really is.)
Jen: Hey Joey. How you feeling?
Joey: I could give you the long version or simply say I feel like crap.
Jen: Do you still have a fever?
Joey: No. (She had said it too quickly, but Jen didn't notice.)
Jen: Let me feel your head. (She put her hand out to Joey's head, but Joey pushed it away.)
Joey: I told you I'm fine. I'm going to go take a shower.
(She grabbed her towel and shower stuff. As she walked to the cabin that held the showers, she let a sigh of relief loose. She was the only one in there. She must have gotten up earlier then she thought if she was alone. She turned on the shower, letting the water run over her body. She just had to make it through two days. Once she gets home on Monday, she will be ok. This does ruin her chances to get between Dawson and Jen, but she was so tired of all that. The more she thought about it, the more she realized how happy Dawson was with Jen. They probably wouldn't notice her trying to come between them anyway. She leaned her head into the water, as she realized that she was fighting a losing battle. She finished up, and came back to an empty cabin. Jen was already gone, probably on the arm of Dawson yet again.)
Dawson: Hey Joey.
Joey: Hey.
Dawson: How are ya feeling?
Joey: Much better. (She smiled, knowing it was a lie.)
Pacey: So, the little baby is better this morning?
Joey: Shut up, Pacey.
Pacey: Ooh. She's got her attitude back.
Dawson: How was everyone's first night in their cabin?
Joey: Wonderful. (Sarcastically) It was too hot in there.
Jen: Actually, I was a little cold. Joey, are you sure you are feeling better?
Joey: Yes. (Joey gave a pointed stare at Jen.) I'm hungry, let's go eat.
(As they walked towards the cafeteria, Jen gave sideward glances at Joey. Why couldn't Joey ever be nice to her? She knew Joey was still sick, but she couldn't do anything about it.)
Teacher: Everyone quiet down. Quiet! You can still eat, but I want you to listen to these announcements. After breakfast, I want everyone to pair up with a partner. We have different activities for you all to do today. You will be handed a list of five activities to do. You must do three out of the five. You can only sign up for three.
Dawson: (Turning to Jen) Would you do me the honor of being my partner?
Jen: (Smiling) I don't know. You don't seem like my type.
Dawson: Your type? If not, I could always go find myself another partner.
Jen: Ok, you convinced me.
Dawson: I thought so.
Dawson: Come on, Jen. Let's go sign up.
(As Dawson pulled Jen towards the sign-up table, Joey looked around to find a partner. She looked at the only candidate available.)
Joey: (Swallowing her pride) Pacey?
Pacey: Yes, my queen?
Joey: Look. I don't feel like being paired with some idiot. Will you do me a favor, and be my partner? After all, you are the greatest idiot of them all.
Pacey: This is how you get people to help you out?
Joey: I really don't like anyone here, so I don't know who to ask.
Pacey: (smiling at Joey's unease) What do you say when you want something?
Joey: (She glared at him.) Please.
Pacey: Good job, Jo. Didn't hurt a bit, now did it? (Still glaring, she watched his smile become even wider.) I will go sign us up for some the three activities. (He could feel her eyes shoot daggers at his back as he walked to the sign-up table where Dawson and Jen were still deciding on what to take.)
Dawson: Pacey, who are you with?
Pacey: Joey.
Dawson: Joey? As in Joey Potter, the girl who lives to torture you?
Pacey: Yeah. Her reason is she doesn't like anyone around here, so she doesn't know who to ask. I think she just wants me.
Dawson: (Laughing) Why don't you go tell her that?
Pacey: I don't have to. She already knows it, but she just won't admit it.
Jen: Sure she does, Pacey.
Sarah: Hi Pacey.
Pacey: Um, hey Sarah. What's up? (He gave her his best smile as he stared at her body in admiration.)
Sarah: Do you have a partner yet? (She pushed, rather coldly, in front of Jen and Dawson.)
Pacey: (Pacey's face dropped.) Yeah, I do.
Sarah: Too bad. (She gave Pacey a cold smile and walked off.)
Pacey: Damn.
Jen: Pacey! You can do better then her. That girl is way too mean and cold-hearted. You should here some of the stuff she says.
Pacey: Maybe. But she looked really good.
Jen: (Letting out a sigh) Let's go, Dawson.
Dawson: Have fun, Pacey. (He smiled.)
Pacey: Yeah right, Dawson. (As Dawson and Jen walked away, Pacey signed up Joey and himself for the first three activities listed. He didn't care what they were since they were all going to suck, no matter what the activity was. Joey walked up next to him.) Let's go have some fun, Joey. (He pulled her out the door.)
Pacey: (He turned to Joey.) Joey, I don't know about you, but I don't feel like going to these activities.
Joey: Your point being?
Pacey: I'm not going to go to them.
Joey: What? I just can't walk into those things by myself.
Pacey: I guess you'll just have to come with me. (He noticed the look she gave him.) I'm not too wild about you coming with me either, but you have a point. You can't walk into those things by yourself. Right now, I could be partnered with some gorgeous girl. Instead, I am doing you favor.
Joey: Gee, I am so sorry, Pacey. I didn't mean to get in the way of your social life.
Pacey: That's not what I meant.
Joey: Then what did you mean?
Pacey: Since I am doing you a favor by being your partner, you could do me a favor.
Joey: (Sarcastically) You're doing me such a favor. You might be my partner, but you aren't going to go to any of these activities with me. What a partner.
Pacey: I am going with or without you. (He walked off into the woods, leaving Joey standing there.)
Joey: Grrr. (She stood there for a minute, looked around, and then followed him into the woods.)
Joey: Stupid tree. (She pushed yet another branch out of her way. They had been walking in silence for about 15 minutes, and she silently berated herself for following Pacey. Anything would be better than this. To top it all off, she had a pretty bad headache.) Pacey, will you talk or something?
Pacey: What do you want me to say? (He slowed down, so she could catch up.)
Joey: I don't know. You're the one who dragged me out here. Think of something.
Pacey: I have something to talk about. Why are you always such a bitch? (She stopped and gave him a dirty look.
Joey: Real funny.
Pacey: I thought so.
Joey: Can't we head back now?
Pacey: We've only been out here for twenty minutes.
Joey: (Smirking) Oh, is that all?
Pacey: Each class is about thirty minutes long. We still got some time.
Joey: Ugh. (This was not her idea of fun, but she wasn't going to tell him she thought her fever was coming back. That would be admitting a weakness to Pacey. That would never happen.)
Pacey: You know, your negative attitude is effecting the people around you.
(She didn't say anything. Pacey liked to fight with her, but sometimes, he would hope that she would be nice just once. It really aggravated him when they fought non-stop. Then he felt something on his shoulder.)
Pacey: What the hell? (He put his hand out and felt rain. Joey was going to kill him.)
Joey: Tell me that isn't what I think it is.
Pacey: That isn't what you think it is.
Joey: Pacey, if I think what is happening is really happening, I am going to kill you.
Pacey: It isn't my fault. I didn't know it was going to rain. (As he said that, it started to rain harder.)
Joey: You're the one who brought us out in this mess! Now look! (She threw out her hand to refer to the pouring rain. This was not going to help her get better considering how cold it was.)
Pacey: We'll just start walking back.
Joey: Pacey, we are going to get soaked! Besides, I'm freezing.
Pacey: You think I'm not? (Yelling over the rain) Can't you just deal?
Joey: (She had really made a big mistake.) We just need to get out of the rain for now, ok? Please? (She was already trying to find somewhere to go to get out of the pouring rain.)
Pacey: Why the hell do we have to do that?
Joey: (Her voice is at a whisper.) Because, um, I'm, um, sick. (She knew it was her own fault that she followed Pacey, knowing it would lead to trouble. She should've just stayed in the cabin. Her fever was still rising, and her headache from yesterday was still not gone.)
Pacey: Wait a minute. (He stopped and turned to look at her.) You want to repeat that again?
Joey: (Sighing) I'm still sick from yesterday. My fever was pretty low this morning, so I thought I would be okay. I still have a bad headache. All this walking made my fever go up. (She didn't even want to look at him. Joey had made a foolish choice, and now she was paying for it.)
Pacey: Joey! What the hell is wrong with you? (She wasn't looking at him, but at least she knew she had made a bad choice. It was, however, his fault that they were stranded in the woods, soaking wet.) Let's go find somewhere to go until this is finished. (He grabbed her hand and led her through the trees.)
Jen: Dawson, where's Joey and Pacey? I haven't seen all day.
(Dawson and Jen were on their way to the next activity. This wasn't her idea of fun, but neither was a rainy day in the woods.)
Dawson: I don't know. I haven't seen them either. We should be in at least one class with them since we had to pick three out of five things to do.
Jen: Yeah, I guess.
Dawson: (Looking at the rain) Jen, are you having fun yet?
Jen: (Smiling up at him) Dawson, didn't you know this is a dream come true? I love to be caught in the cold and rainy woods. At least I am with you.
Dawson: That would be called an upside. (He grabbed her hand as they walked over to their next activity.)
(Pacey had found them a big tree to go under that protected them pretty well from the rain. He was still mad at Joey for lying about not being so sick. Why did she have to be so damn proud? She couldn't open herself up to anyone or admit when she's vulnerable. Pacey realized she was a lot like him. When people always let you down, you don't open up to anyone. You don't trust a soul.)
Joey: (Feeling guilty) I'm sorry, Pacey.
Pacey: What?
Joey: Pacey, please don't mess with me. I'm not repeating myself, so you can get the thrill out of hearing me say that word again.
Pacey: No, I was just a little surprised. I'm sorry too. I didn't think about the possibility of you getting sick out here.
Joey: This is too weird. We have to stop being so nice to each other. We don't want it to become a normal thing. (She finally looked up at his face. He was looking at her too.)
Pacey: That would be bad. Really bad. (He smiled. To his surprise, she smiled back.)
(Pacey and Joey had been waiting for the rain to stop for about 20 minutes, but it had been falling pretty steadily. Pacey shivered. He was practically soaked from when he and Joey were standing out in the middle of the rain. He looked at her and saw her shiver.)
Pacey: You know, I thought fevers were supposed to make people hot.
Joey: It can, but it can also make you cold. Right now, I feel like my face is burning, but the rest of my body is frozen. (She saw him give her a look of pity, so she tried to control her shivering.) It isn't too bad. I'm not as cold as I was before.
Pacey: Liar, liar, pants on fire.
Joey: No, I'm telling the truth.
Pacey: Yeah, ok. Whatever. I knew last night that you were still sick when you convinced Dawson and Jen that you were better. Why can't you just admit you are as sick as hell? You don't always have to be so damn tough. It is ok to show a little weakness every now and then. Besides, you are already pretty low on my standards, so you can't get any lower.
Joey: Thanks for the pep talk, Pacey. I knew there was a lot of love between us, but I didn't realize it was so much.
Pacey: Oh Joey. Can't you just take a joke?
Joey: No, I can't. I'm a negative person, remember? I've had enough of this arguing. I'm too sick. Do I have to tell you again?
Pacey: No you don't. But telling me before we went into the woods would've helped.
Joey: I already told you I was sorry for that.
Pacey: I know. How soaked did you get?
Joey: To put it simply, a lot. Why?
Pacey: Just wondering.
Joey: Ok.
(No matter how much she tried to hide it, she was still shivering. There was only one way left to get her warm.)
Pacey: Joey, take off your jacket.
Joey: (Turning towards Pacey) What?
Pacey: Don't worry. I'm not trying to come on to you. I have an idea.
Joey: If I get any colder, you're entirely responsible. (She pulled off her jacket. What the hell was he thinking?) Now what?
Pacey: Come over here. (He picked her up and set her down in between his legs.)
Joey: What the hell are you doing?
Pacey: Jo, you're soaked. I stayed pretty dry because my coat was thicker. Right now, you're freezing. Don't deny it because you haven't stopped shivering. (He pulled her against him and wrapped his coat around her.)
Joey: Fine. (She was pretty cold, and she couldn't hide it anymore. She was tired of pretending she was ok. But, she just didn't feel like depending on anyone. She laid up against him and relaxed as best as she could. It was hard because it was Pacey after all.)
Joey: Pacey?
Pacey: Huh?
Joey: What did you mean earlier when you said you could be paired with some gorgeous girl?
Pacey: (Trying to remember what he had said) Um, that girl Samantha asked me if I had a partner. (Joey laughed.)
Pacey: Mind telling me what is so funny?
Joey: Are we talking about Samantha Reed?
Pacey: Yeah, so?
Joey: Pacey, can't you do any better then that? She talks about everyone even if she pretends to like you.
Pacey: That's what Jen said.
Joey: Don't say that word.
Pacey: What, Jen?
(Joey looked up at him and glared.)
Pacey: Joey, you really need to get a life and stop worrying about them.
Joey: (Sitting up) Do you think I like it? If I could, I would get on with my life. You can't stop liking someone when you want to.
Pacey: Well, you need to go out more and find yourself someone else. You need to get over him.
Joey: (Sarcastically) I can totally see that happening in the near future. Come on, I have all that free time on my hands. (She turned away and lay back against him. Unfortunately, he was right. The only way to move on is to find someone else. Someone who returned her feelings.) I realize that they are pretty happy together, and I have thought that maybe I do need to move on.
(Pacey looked down at her in surprise. She had actually admitted that out loud, to him of all people.)
Joey: Pacey, now that I have bared my soul, may I ask you a question?
Pacey: (Hesitantly) Sure.
Joey: Did you really have a relationship with Ms. Jacobs?
Pacey: I should have seen that one coming. (Taking a deep breath) Yes, I did. (He couldn't tell what her reaction was since she was lying against him. For some reason, he didn't want her to react badly to it.)
Joey: Did you love her?
Pacey: I don't know. I am only fifteen. Do I even know what love is?
Joey: Oh.
(That was all she said. He needed more of a response then that.)
Pacey: Why?
Joey: I was just wondering if you were over her.
Pacey: I think so. I really try not to think about it too much anymore.
Joey: If she came back to Capeside, do you think you would fall for her again?
Pacey: (He had never really thought about it that way before.) I really don't know, Jo.
Joey: Ok. (She scooted closer to him as she tried to ward off another chill. She really did feel sorry for him. She had never really liked Ms. Jacobs. It was very cowardly of her to leave Pacey here to deal with all the rumors.) I think it is about time we moved on. Obsessing about Dawson and Ms. Jacobs isn't doing us any good.
Pacey: (Laughing) No, it isn't. (They didn't talk anymore, and, luckily, Joey soon fell asleep.)
Pacey: Joey. Wake up. Joey? (She just moaned. She curled closer into Pacey's chest, not wanting to wake up. Why was Bessie always waking her up? She was felt better, warmer, and more.)
(Joey wouldn't wake up for anything. She moaned, and then grabbed a hold of his shirt. She looked nice just lying there in his arms. Wait a minute. His thoughts were taking a different turn. He'd better get her up before they got worse.)
Pacey: Joey, wake up. The rain stopped.
Joey: Bessie, leave me alone. (As soon as she opened her eyes, she realized she was on top of someone, and Bessie was nowhere in sight. She jumped up.)
Pacey: (Smiling) I think Bessie would kill you if you mistook me for her.
Joey: I'm sorry. (Looking around) Good, the rain stopped.
Pacey: We should start heading back before someone notices we were gone. I also want to get you back before it starts raining again.
Joey: Ok, boss.
(She was a little disappointed that she was leaving the warmth of his arms. He stood up, bringing her with him. She grabbed her jacket and put it on, glad that it wasn't too damp. Pacey started walking, so she had no choice but to follow.)
