Inside Emotion
Part one of Different Waters

Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Dawson's Creek or its various owners. I make absolutely no profit off of this fanfiction. Please don't sue me, because I’m a poor student and you wouldn’t get anything from me.

Author’s Note: This takes place after the season finale. Dawson and Joey are dating. Jack and Andie never came to Capeside. Jen moved back to New York after her grandfather died. I might bring her back if I can figure out how to use her in the story. This is a P/J story. I promise. It might take a little while to get there though. I think it’s more realistic that way. Be patient.

I won't wait for tomorrow,
'Cause it won't go away,
And there's no one there to follow,
So I'll go my own way.

I've changed my answers,
And I've changed my plans,
And I'm living for the feelings
That I can't understand.

I've gone away from all I have known,
And I'm holding on to freedom,
So I won't be coming home...

A little inside emotion, but it's nothing I can't take.
A little part of me's been sleeping, but I think it's now awake.
I see it in the summer and the way that it's dying.
Life is so much deeper than the feelings I've been fighting.

I'll follow my heart now 'cause my mind's been misleading,
Somewhere down the road I think I'll find what I've been missing.
I think I've finally found a reason, I think I've finally found an answer
Somewhere in the seasons are the feelings I've been after,
I have found a reason, I think I've finally found an answer
Somewhere in the seasons is the only thing that matters.

She had more of me than I could ever hope to gather,
And I could not see 'cause my horizons had been shattered.
Love has a way of making everything easy,
And with this new-found freedom, I have never been so lonely.

A little inside emotion, but it's nothing I can't take.
A little part of me's been sleeping, but I think it's now a wake.
Well, I think it's now awake.

Capeside High School -- Friday, 8:20 am

Pacey stood at his locker, throwing books in and then roughly slamming the door. Needless to say his day hadn’t gotten off to a good start. Dawson approached as the row of lockers vibrated. Pacey sighed and slid to a sitting position on the floor holding his head in his hands.

“Bad morning?” Dawson inquired taking a seat next to Pacey on the floor.

“Yeah, you could say that,” said Pacey, “My dad found my report card and he wasn’t too happy about it.”

“Ah, I see” said Dawson sympathetically.

“After he found it he proceeded to lecture me for a half hour about what a screw up I was. He reminded me for the millionth time that I would never amount to anything. He said he didn’t even understand why he bothered with me at all.”

“Oh, come on Pacey, you know that’s not true.”

“Yeah I know. It doesn’t matter. Not really. I stopped listening to him a long time ago.” said Pacey uneasily. The first bell rang and Pacey got up quickly. “I have to go to class. I’ll see you later Dawson.”

“Pacey, are you sure you’re ok?” said Dawson slightly concerned.

“Yeah, of course, I’m fine” said Pacey still a bit uneasy.

“Really?” said Dawson with a worried look on his face.

“Yes, D, really. I’m fine. But thanks for worrying about me.” said Pacey flashing a hesitant smile.

“Well, someone has too.”

The moment was a bit strange. The silence was finally broken when Joey came up to them

“Hey Dawson,” she said kissing him on the lips.

“Oh please there are other people here you know,” Pacey groaned.

“Oh hey Pacey, didn’t notice you there. How’s the town loser doing today?” Joey returned sarcastically.

“Bite me Joey.” said Pacey and then stormed off down the hall.

“Hey, that’s my line!” she yelled after him. “Dawson, what is his problem today?”

“That wasn’t a very nice thing to say, Joey.”

“What? I just called him a loser. I do it everyday. Besides I was kidding. Can’t he take a joke?”

“Let’s just say you aren’t the only one who called him a loser today.”

“Oh, he had another run in with his dad, didn’t he?”

“Yeah. Found his report card. Apparently gave him a real verbal lashing.”

“God, I feel really stupid. I should talk to him. Apologize or something. I’ll see you later?”

“Yeah. I have to work at the video store after school, but come visit me.” He gave her a quick kiss and then watched her as she ran off down the hallway in search of Pacey.

Capeside Waterfront Park -- Friday, 9:00 am

Joey found Pacey sitting on a bench in the park by the waterfront. He saw her coming and got up to leave.

“No, Pacey, wait. Please,” said Joey taking a seat next to Pacey on the bench.

“What do you want?” he trying unsuccessfully to hide his hurt and anger.

“I’m sorry about what I said before. I was just kidding you know.”

“Yeah I know. It still hurt though. I already have enough people calling me a loser.”

“Dawson said you had a fight with your dad this morning. What happened?”

“Oh you know the usual. Telling me how worthless I am. How I’ll never amount to anything. How stupid I am.”

“Pacey, you are not stupid. I know I tease you all the time but I don’t think you’re stupid. You just don’t apply yourself. You seem to lack motivation.”

“Well it’s hard to stay motivated when nobody cares or tries to help you.”

“You can help yourself Pacey.”

“I guess,” he said reluctantly, “but I’m really behind. Especially in English, and I’m not getting any help from Peterson. It’s just too late.”

“I’ll help you, Pacey,” said Joey quietly, barely audible.

“What?” he said, not hearing what she had said.

“If you want me to I’ll help you catch up.”

“Really?” said Pacey sounding a little skeptical, “What’s the catch?”

“No catch. Can’t I just do it because I want to?”

“Yeah I guess,” said Pacey still a bit hesitant. He thought for a minute, then a devilish smile crossed his face and he said, “Excellent Miss Potter, when do we begin?”

“Whenever you’re ready Mr. Witter.”

“How about tomorrow at my house? The family won’t be around.”

“Sounds good.”

“I’ll be on my best behavior, I promise,” he said wearing his best angelic schoolboy face.

“You better be, Pacey. You know I won’t put up with any of your crap.”

“Yes Miss Potter,” said Pacey mockingly.

“See you tomorrow, Pacey,” said Joey rolling her eyes and turned to walk off.

“Joey?” said Pacey taking her arm and turning her around.

“Yeah?”

“Thanks,” said Pacey very sincerely, giving her a hug.

“No problem, Pacey,” said Joey a little confused.

Video Store -- Friday, 4:30 pm

Dawson sat at the counter of the video store. The afternoon had been very slow. He had only had two customers. If it hadn’t been for all the free video rentals Dawson would have quit long ago. At the moment he was engrossed in his 200th viewing of Jurassic Park. He looked up when he heard the door chime and saw Joey walking up to the counter.

“Hey Joey,” said Dawson smiling. He was happy to see her not having seen her since the morning.

“Hey Dawson. Oh God, Dawson, you aren’t watching Jurassic Park again are you?”

“Yeah,” said Dawson sheepishly, pausing the video and turning his attention to Joey.

“How many times is that Dawson? Like 500?”

“No,” said Dawson defensively, “it’s only 200. Besides it’s a really great movie directed by a really great director.”

“Yeah, I know, Dawson. Steven Spielberg. God of all directors. Yadda yadda,” said Joey with a impish smile.

“Hey, show some respect,” said Dawson laughing, “Anyway, you up for movie night tonight?”

“I would love to, but I can’t. I will be taking care of the lovely and charming Alexander tonight,” said Joey with a sigh.

“Oh, ok. I assume you’ll be needing this then,” said Dawson pulling a video off the shelf behind him.

“The English Patient. You know me so well. Thanks, Dawson. You’re a lifesaver.” said Joey with a smile.

“Oh, hey, how did things go with Pacey this morning?” asked Dawson, remembering the incident in the hallway.

“Fine I guess. We talked. I promised to help him catch up on his school work.”

“You what? Joey, are you insane? You’re going to drive each other crazy. You’ll kill each other before you even get any work done.”

“Yeah, I know. I don’t know what I was thinking, but he really needs help Dawson. I’m going over to his house tomorrow. If I’m still alive afterwards I’ll come over to your house and we can watch a movie.”

“Great. I’ll have a movie ready and waiting.”

“Well, Dawson, I have to get home before Bessie has a cow. I’ll see you tomorrow,” said Joey as she walked to the door. Before leaving she turned back to Dawson, “Oh, and Dawson, I trust we will be watching something other than Jurassic Park.”

Dawson laughed, “What? Don’t you trust me, Joey?”

“Bye Dawson,” said Joey laughing as she head out the door to her night of baby hell.

To be continued...

The story at the beginning is by Storyhill (formerly Chris and Johnny). I think they’re pretty cool. You can visit the Unofficial Storyhill Home Page if you want to find out more about them.

Please e-mail me and tell me what you think. Don't be too harsh. This is my first attempt at writing a fanfiction. Also I’m not to fond of my title at the moment, so if you have any suggestions they would be appreciated.
