It’s almost impossible to catch Marc Overmars while he’s running with the ball. His speed is incredibly amazing. And to add more to his quality, cards, neither yellows nor reds, almost never touch his record.
Never lacks of goal himself, he can also assist any striker to score. Cha Bum Kun, South Korean ex coach in World Cup 98 once said, "With Overmars nearby, anyone can score a goal."
A former manager at Ajax, Louis Van Gaal, (now at Barcelona) sniffed his great talent. Overmars’ a lefty, means he could use his left leg better than his right one. Despite it, Van Gaal put him mostly on right back, and then as a right winger. This kind of discipline finally strengthen his legs. Now he can shoot powerfully with both feet.
Overmars can play on either flank, though he prefers the left. He drifts past defenders with pace and excellent close control.
He moved to Arsenal at 1997 for £5 million, and shortly after that, as though he couldn’t wait to put his hands on some silverware, brought The Gunners to double winners.
His existence for Arsenal seem to be priceless. He rarely sit on the bench, (I think maybe it’s because Arsené Wenger loves him so much…heh..heh…), except for some times when he’s injured. When he’s in tiptop condition, he’s a quick lightning threat to anyone who becomes his opponent on the green.
"He’s both a striker and a winger. Everyone would want a player like him. Whatever the position he’s in, he’ll still have the striking ability in him." said Guus Hiddink, Netherlands’s manager in World Cup 98. And yes, Overmars has been successfully done it in Arsenal.
The Dutch superstar is known as a good mannered man, inside and outside the stadium. He’s called Overspeed, Overdrive, or The Flying Dutchman by his comrades at Arsenal. About food, he looks forward to a big English breakfast everyday.
"Seriously, I was the only player at Ajax who used to have fried eggs for breakfast everyday. It’s one of my superstitions. If I don’t have a fried breakfast in the morning, I won’t play or train well."
Well, we certainly don’t want that to happen, do we? So go grab the meals, Marc!
