In short no. But to elaborate:
This is a double question. GS slaves are required by their Owners, The Captains of Gorean Shores to attend slave class if they are able. And read the notes if they are unable to attend. Privately owned slaves attend if their Master requires that they do so.
As to earning silks through the lessons provided by Gorean Shores, there is no requirement that a privately owned slave do so. A Master may decree whatever level of expertise he desires on His slave and hence the silk colour He decrees that His slave is.

Well Master Sandman, a girl doesn't think that it needs to involve formal lessons, but Jarl Keeper has taught flicka how to swim. He threw her overboard way out to sea and didn't throw her a rope for 15 ehn. Flicka can now swim, not very stylish but enough to stop her drowning.
