Chapter 8
Nick and Becky watched Kevin and Kara leave. "So what's her story?" Nick asked Becky.
"What do you mean?" Becky asked in reply, instantly on her guard, although inwardly she knew what he meant and was wondering the same thing.
"Well she flirts like crazy with Xavi or whatever his name is, then takes off with Kevin. She's not a player is she?"
"I thought only guys were players," Becky teased, avoiding his question.
Nick gave her a warning glance. "You know what I mean. She's not going to hurt Kevin is she?"
Becky turned serious, and led Nick off the dance floor and to a quiet part of the lounge. "I don't know, but I seriously hope not. Kara just broke up with her boyfriend of over a year, right before we left to come here. She's really vulnerable right now, and is looking for a guy to replace Paul, even if it is only temporary. I'm afraid she's gonna end up hurting herself even more by having a fling while she's here."
"Or Kevin," Nick interjected.
"Maybe," Becky conceded. "But I really don't think she will. She's my best friend, and even though she's hurt right now, she isn't insensitive or stupid. I don't think she'll do anything to hurt Kevin, although, truth be told, I've never seen her act this way before." Becky said in a puzzled voice. "So, even I don't know what to expect anymore."
Nick looked into her eyes and saw genuine confusion and worry there. "Well, maybe we should warn Kevin of this, so that maybe he can help prevent both her and himself from being hurt."
Becky looked at Nick. "Maybe. But I know that Kara has much deeper feelings for Kevin than she does for Xavi. She's been in love with Kevin for two years now, well... he's always been her favorite Backstreet Boy, I don't really know about the love part. Anyway, she's told me that all she feels for Xavi is a physical attraction, and it seems that at least that much of it is reciprocated." Becky looked over at the dance floor, and she saw Xavi flirting with a pretty young woman, who looked to be about their age, nineteen or so. she laughed bitterly. "Although Xavi seems to feel that way about any girl over the age of sixteen."
Nick followed Becky's gaze and saw Xavi. "If I were you I'd be more worried about Xavi hurting Kara than about Kara hurting herself."
"Yeah, maybe," Becky said absently. "I'll talk to Kara again later, and you see if you can talk to Kevin."
"Deal," Nick replied, and looked around the lounge, where people had been slowly starting to drift out, leaving it relatively quiet. "This place seems to be dying down fast. Do you like video games? I have a Nintendo 64 upstairs in my room."
"I love video games," Becky replied enthusiastically. "Do you have the new Zelda game?"
"Yup, I just got it. You wanna go up stairs and play it with me?" Nick asked.
"Sure, lets go." Together they went up to Nick and Brian's room.

Kara and Kevin sat on Kara's bed, talking. They'd been there for almost an hour, and had learned quite a bit about each other. Kara had told Kevin about what had happened with Paul, and he had been extrememly caring and understanding while listening to her tell it. He knew that she was vulnerable right now, and was a bit leery about where the night was going to lead, because throughout the course of the night, Kara had slowly made her way closer to him, and made several subtle advances, which he luckily recognized for what the were. If something were to happen that night, he knew that she would regret it, and he didn't want to risk having her hate him for it, which he knew she would.
"So Kev," Kara asked, moving even closer to him on the bed. "Do you have a girlfriend waiting for you back home?"
Kevin edged back a bit. "Nope," he replied. Kara was close enough that he could smell the light scent of her perfume, and it was making him, and he wanted to nuzzle her neck, and breath deeply of her scent.
It took all of his will-power to stand up. "I should get going," he said. "We have to do a run-through of our music and dance routines for tomorrow night. You're coming to the concert, right?"
Kara looked blankly at him for a minute before replying. "Yeah, I'll be there." Kara stood up and went to Kevin. "Are you sure you have to go?" she asked in a low voice as she lightly ran a hand across Kevin's chest.
"Yeah, I'm sure," Kevin replied, catching Kara's hand with his own and placing a light kiss on the back of it. "Will you have breakfast with me tomorrow?"
"I'd love to," Kara replied.
"Great. I'll meet you in the lobby at eight thirty, okay?"
"Okay," Kara said.
Kevin bent and pressed a kiss on Kara's forehead. "Good night," he said, and turned and strode out the door before Kara could say anthing.
"Good night," she said softly as the door closed behind Kevin.
Kara went and sat down on her bed to think. She knew that Kevin was interested in her, that much was obvious. So why did he refuse all of her advances? If it had been Xavi in the room with her, there wouldn't have been much talking going on at all, Kara knew. That Kevin seemed so interested in her, and yet had refused all her advances made her angry. He probably thinks he's too good for me, Kara thought angrily. That or he was lying about not having a girlfriend at home. Kara decided that if Kevin wanted her, he was going to have to come to her. She wasn't going to waste any more time trying to win him over when she already had Xavi wrapped around her little finger. She'd just let Kevvy see that, and make his own decision about whether or not he wanted her. If not then it was his loss, not hers.
Satisfied with her decision, or so she thought, Kara got ready for bed. As she slipped between the cool sheets and switched off the light, she thought over her decision in her mind. She had no idea how wrong she was in her thinking.
