Chapter Nine

"This mall is packed today Anna," Carrie said in astonishment as both she and Anna walked through the entrance of Madison Square mall, which was decorated for the holidays and packed with last minute Christmas shoppers. Ever since Elle had finally let Carrie go to the mall without an adult, Carrie had taken full advantage of it. Carrie decided that, because Elle was busy with the interview, she could finish her Christmas shopping and wrap the presents before Elle picked her up at Anna's. "Do you think that there will be anything left for her?" Carrie asked as the dim sound of Christmas carols floated through her ears.

"I hope so," Anna said. "What are you thinking of getting Elle?"

"Well, I think that I am going to get her one of those huge mugs that they sell at Pottery Barn. I saved up just enough with my allowance money. When she was little, Elle and my mom would always share hot cocoa on Christmas. Ever since mom died, Elle has lost those traditions, and I am going to try to get some of them back."

"All right Carrie. I think that Pottery Barn is downstairs."

"That sounds like a good place to start." With that, Carrie and Anna headed downstairs towards the Pottery Barn's open doors. When Carrie had finally decided on a mug, she and Anna walked to the pay phones to call Anna's mom to ask if she could pick them up. Anna's mom, Christina, would be on her way in 20 minutes.

After sharing a chocolate chip cookie from Mrs. Field's, Anna said, "Should we start walking and meet her half way?"

"I think that would be best." Carrie confirmed.

Twenty minutes later, Anna and Carrie were walking down Madison Ave. Suddenly Carrie heard a noise that sounded like someone was popping bubble wrap. Seconds later, Carrie felt something sharp cut through her shoulder and then again in her stomach. It was then that the cold reality hit both of the 12-year-old girls. They had walked into the crossfire of a shootout between two gangs. Anna began screaming as Carrie fell to the ground, breaking the mug that she had worked so hard to find. Carrie, now soaked with blood, managed to say, "Elle," before she was enveloped in eternal darkness.
