Chapter Five
"Katie" a voice said over the waves of the ocean and the squawking of
seagulls.
It had been a little more that a year since the night she had been
stripped of her dignity. She occasionally went to a counselor, but knew she
was going to be all right and that it wasn't her fault. She had been through
enough to handle the rape. After 3 months of persistent calls from reporters
who wanted to know how "Nick Carter's Girlfriend" felt about what happened,
the calls started to die down. Many letters from Nick's fans were sent to her
to tell her how sorry they were. She was overwhelmed how many people cared
about her, it felt like a real family. It was a year after HELL she knew
she would not soon forget. She never did get her memory back about what
actually happened and the identity of the men or man that raped her. The
person that had rescued her was a young man about 30 years old who had heard
some screams before she was knocked unconscious, but by the time he had come
to his senses to find out what happened, the worst had been done. Katie had
met him about 2 months after the attack and thanked him. If he never had the
urge to see what the screams were, she might have been dead in the alley. He
had a wife and 2 children who adored her and overtime she left his house,
which was once a month, her heart ached to have alike like that. She and Nick
had grown apart the first half year of the attack. She couldn't bring herself
to trust anyone, not even Nick. Even after she moved out, he still visited
her from time to time and they eventually got back together. It had been 6
months and they were going strong. Although Katie trusted him, she decided to
live by herself, until she finished college. That day had come. nick had been
there, along with Brian, his family and the rest of her friends. They had
helped her get through that hard time in her life with smiles and happiness.
When she felt that diploma in her hand, she felt such pride and sadness.
Pride, because she had finally accomplished her dream even through all the
crisis and struggles but sadness because her Mom didn't see her. She missed
her so much. She never forgot her and always prayed to her for support.
Her thoughts interrupted her as Nick sat next to her. God, was he handsome.
The same blue eyes that had looked at her in the hospital all sad and
swollen, had grown into happiness and energy.
'This was it. It 's now or never' Nick thought to himself. "Katie," he
started, "ever since I's laid eyes on you, I knew you were the one I wanted
to spend the rest of my life with.
"I feel the same for you Nick." Katie said, tears in her eyes. "I don't think
I could have gotten through this without you."
He picked up an oyster and sat next to her.
"you know, oysters don't look to hot on the outside. They are pretty plain.
But sometimes, when you look on the inside, they have a pearl in them which
makes them beautiful."
He handed the shell to her.
"When you were attacked, I honestly thought you were going to be in the
worst shape possible with all the bruises and everything. I didn't even think
I could look at you like that. But when I looked at you sleeping, even
though you did have bruises on you and you didn't look so full of like or
happy like you were, I still thought you were beautiful. That's when I
realized I really truly did love you. Brian told me he knew he loved Leighane
because she always made him happy, and even if she just stepped out of bed
and looked a mess, he still thought she was beautiful. That's exactly what I
feel for you. I know I am not always there for you because of touring and
stuff, but I do love you."
He pointed the clam " You know, even though that oyster doesn't look so
beautiful on the outside, maybe it is beautiful on the inside, how about you
look?"
Katie pried the oyster opened and inside she found a delicate simple ring.
Nick took her hand and looked in her eyes. "Katie, will you marry me?"
Katie was crying softly, but shook her head 'yes' She kissed him as he
slipped the ring on her finger; That night was never forgotten.
