Interview w/ Phil Grollo - 2/18/09

Frank Rogaine: Thanks for sitting down with us Phil, really appreciate you taking the time out to talk to us.

Phil Grollo: No problem.

Frank Rogaine: Now Phil, you suffered a blood clot in your left leg back in June of 08'. Out of nowhere your life is in danger and emergency surgeries are needed to make sure you're still around at the end of the day. Where did this come from?

Phil Grollo: No one really knows, specialists can't be sure. They have a couple ideas on why it might have happened. But one things for sure, someone my age, shouldn't have this happen. It's something they don't see. The doctors are talking about putting me in some medical journal because it's so rare.

Frank Rogaine: Two months in the hospital, how did you handle being on your back all that time?

Phil Grollo: It was a nut house, I went through a lot this summer, I guess you can say I learned a lot about the value of life. When you have nothing to do but think, you learn some things about yourself. I guess I wasn't as bulletproof as I always thought I was. When you can't even muster the strength to walk yourself to the bathroom, things must be pretty bad. I've never allowed myself to be weak. I always pushed myself to be strong. But for the first time, I had to rely on other people for things I used to take for granted. Like walking..

Frank Rogaine: You've gone through Physical Therapy and are due to have more soon. How is it coming along?

Phil Grollo: Slowly.. I can walk again. Which took more effort then I thought it would ever take. And running, that seems like a dream. We'll see how things go, but sitting on the sidelines is never something I liked to do. Sitting in my hospital bed or at home knowing that my team is out there competing without me drives me crazy. I wanna be out there more than anything. I'd love to be 100 percent, but honestly, I'm not. So I guess we'll see what happens.

Frank Rogaine: Your team has held up pretty well without you. How do you think they feel about playing without you?

Phil Grollo: I really don't know. I feel like I bring even more intensity out there than there already is with Jake and Charlie prowling on defense. I think I can be a threat on D and have a pretty good arm. I used to be pretty mobile for my size. But like I said.. thats all up in the air now. Lets see how things fall into place.

Frank Rogaine: Should we expect to see you on the feild in March?

Phil Grollo: I wouldn't count on it. But.. I'll definatley be there in one shape or another. Never count me out.. I'm out to prove i can be what I once was. But it's going to be tough.

Frank Rogaine: Anything you'd like to say to St. Charles players?

Phil Grollo: (with a bit of a chuckle) Oh yes, They need to prepare themselves for my return. Because I'm going to be out there gunning for them even more than before. I've got something to prove on my return. They need to enjoy the time without me. Because when I'm back on the field, I'm not going to take the time to check for jersey numbers, they can sort the bodies out when I'm through with them.

Frank Rogaine: Thanks for your time Phil.

Phil Grollo: Anytime.
