He is famous for his sexist, racist, and other inappropriate remarks on the air. Giving himself the title “King of all media” wasn’t a wrong choice of words. Stern, being an author, director, actor, talk show host, and a deejay he is truly the king of all these media outlets. Stern’s book Private Parts was on the national best seller list for over 2 months. Allegedly having nearly 20 million listeners, he’s number one. Stern was born January 12, 1954 in the town of Roosevelt. He was constantly teased and bullied. Eventually the bullying lead to a drug problem. His father only added more stress to Howard’s life. Being called a moron and told to shut up wasn’t a large help to Howard. After Stern and his friend were beaten up, his mother finally decided it was time to move. Howard’s father was a radio engineer. Once a year, Ben, Howard’s father would take him to work. It was here that Howard decided to be in radio. He stated so in his book Private Parts, “It’s weird, but I always wanted to be in radio. That was all I could think about from the time I was 5 years old.” Right before graduation, Ben asked Howard what he wanted to do as a career. Howard said he wanted to be in radio. It was around this time that Ben stopped being as hard on Howard. Ben told his son that there was a program in Boston University. Howard graduated magna cum laude, and received a bachelors degree. Howard also met his future wife, Alison. Howard’s first official job was WNTN in Newton. This job didn’t last long. After not getting paid for a week, he quit. He eventually got another job offer, but got too nervous and turned them down. Later, he called back to apologize and try out for the job. Unfortunately, he messed up on his first night. He came back into the studio and asked for his job back and explained that he just got nervous. He got promoted to program manager. He left this job after being forced to fire some one. He didn’t fire the jockey. His next job was WCCC in Hartford, Connecticut. Being the public affairs director as well as being the jockey was torture. The only good part of being the affairs director was that he could go 1.5 hours without music. He had to interview people. When interviewing, Howard would ask questions like “ What are you’re dating habits?” Or he would say, “ Were you with a woman last night?” He was told that he was just as odd as Imus. According to Howard, “Imus didn’t do anything but come on the air and say, ‘quack-quack, who loves you, baby?’” A good thing that happened to Howard at WCCC was that he met Fred Norris. Stern eventually landed a job in Detroit. Stern met his “Partner in crime” here. Her name? Robin Quivers. Stern left after WNBC offered him a job. If only he knew that the next few years were going to be the worst he’s ever had. Eventually he got fired for numerous fines from the FCC. Eventually he got fired but he was still paid because it was a breech of contract on their part. Howard moved to K-ROCK with Robin, Fred, And Jackie “the joke-man” Martling. During his career, Howard made many friends. One of them was Arnold Schwarzenegger. His many other friends included Sylvester Stalone, Patti Reagan, Richard Simmons, Dave Letterman, and Jay Leno. Richard Simmons says, “Howard is the bully in every schoolyard, but for some reason I love him.” Unfortunately, Alison and Howard were divorced in 1999. Now Stern is married to Beth Ostrosky. Stern had 11 months left on FM radio. He is moving to a satellite radio company call Sirius. Stern is a well-accomplished individual. He made it through many of life’s struggles. He’s not only the rude and obscene radio personality, but he is also a human with a family. The only reason he says what he says is because he is an optimistic person, he laughs at himself and others. He feels if he can do it at himself, others can too.
