Part 34
The forest was dark and still as the Lords shimmered into the clearing.
“Are you sure this is where we need to be?” asked Alex as he looked around.
“The mid-wife said this woman lives in the forest near this clearing,” answered Kevin as he spotted a cottage. “Over there.”
All three men looked towards the tiny cottage set back into the forest. There was a light glowing in the window and a thin line of smoke drifting out of the chimney. It looked innocent enough but they all knew better than to trust appearances.
“How do we do this?”
Looking at Howard, Kevin said, “Transform and fly to the window….see if the baby is there.”
With a wave of his hand, Howard did as Kevin requested. A couple minutes later, he returned.
“She’s nursing him.”
“Is she alone?”
“Yes,
sire. She has protection…amulets all around the room.”
“Amulets?” questioned Alex.
“Like Samantha has…to protect against evil.”
“What if we can’t go near her?”
Kevin smiled softly. “Alex, if they’re like Samantha’s, we’ll be fine. We aren’t evil any longer.”
“But our powers are from the dark side.”
“Come on,” urged Howard. “Let’s get your son and return to Samantha. I don’t like leaving her alone for very long.”
Kevin shimmered into the cabin followed by Howard and Alex.
The young woman wasn’t startled by the sudden appearance of the lords and as she settled the infant into a cradle, she said, “I’ve been expecting you.”
“How is my son?”
“He had a peaceful night. My lord, I am deeply honored that you allowed me to be of service protecting this precious angel and would very much like to return with you to the chateau.”
As Kevin scooped his son up in his arms, Howard said, “Thank you for your offer, but my wife is better now and will be able to take care of him.”
Tucking her head, the lady apologized, “I didn’t mean to offend you, my lord…or insult Lady Samantha.”
Kevin spoke up, “We appreciate all that you’ve done and the risk you took by caring for him.”
“It was a privilege to serve you my lord.”
“What is your name?”
“Elizabeth.”
“Elizabeth, your generosity will be repaid ten-fold,” said Kevin. “If you need anything, please, come to the chateau and speak with Nickolas, our grounds keeper. He will make sure your needs are taken care of.”
“Thank you, my lord,” replied Elizabeth with a curtsey.
AT the door, Alex nudged Howard, “We should take her back with us. Samantha was still extremely weak and she may not be able to handle feeding him.”
Howard looked back at Elizabeth and then to Kevin. “Alex has a point.”
“What do you want to do?”
“Allow her to pack her things and send Nickolas to get her. I don’t want to take any chances.”
Kevin turned back to Elizabeth. “Nickolas will be here at noon to get you. Be prepared to move your things to our chateau.”
“Thank you, my lord.”
With that, the three lords and the infant shimmered back to Samantha.
Appearing in the room, Howard rushed to Samantha’s side and took her hand in his. “My love, we have your son.”
Her eyes fluttered open as Kevin placed the tiny infant in her arms. “He’s so little,” she whispered as she took his tiny fist in her fingers.
“He needs a name,” said Alex as he sat at the foot of her bed.
Samantha looked to Kevin as he sat beside her opposite Howard. “What do you think of Forrest?”
“Sounds perfect, my love,” smiled Kevin.
Looking at her three lords, tears rolled down her cheeks as she said, “I love all of you….for eternity.”
