Fog began to creep in around him and darkness loomed on the horizon as the young man struggled through the forest leading a single horse carrying his wife.  They’d wandered for days, lost in the depths of the Black Forest.  He was desperate to find food and shelter, especially for his wife.  She was growing weaker with each passing hour and he was scared for her life.

Amidst a coughing fit, she called out, “Brian.”

Brian stopped and moved to stand beside the horse.  Reaching up, he pulled the blanket back around her shoulders.  “Samantha, you’ve got to keep this blanket around you,” he scolded lovingly.

“I….I can’t…tired….so…tired.”

“I know,” sympathized Brian.  “We’ll find something soon, I promise.”

Were they just words or would he really find something soon?

Her tired body began to slip from the horse but Brian caught her.  Pushing her back up, he swung his own body up behind her.  With his arms around his wife, he headed the horse down the path, praying he was headed out of the forest.

It wasn’t far down the path when Brian spotted a light in the distance and then a shadow darting across the path.  This was their break.  Maybe that light and shadow would mean food and shelter.

“STOP!  Help!  I need your help!!” called Brian as he nudged the horse a little faster.

Reaching the spot where he’d seen the shadow, Brian slid down off the horse and began to look around.  Someone had been there, there was no doubt about it.  Looking further into the woods, he saw that whoever it was had gone in the same direction they were headed.  Looking up, he spotted a clearing and the light.  It was coming from a……château.  Someone lived out in this remote part of The Black Forest.  Taking the horse’s reigns, he started towards the house and what he hoped would be help.
