Moses Bowen and his wife, Rebecca Rees, were emigrants to America from Wales in 1698, taking up land in Pennsylvania. Their son, John, born in Wales, married in Pennsylvania to Lily McIlhaney, a Scotch-Irish girl of seventeen years, d/o Henry and Jane McIlhaney. John and Lily moved to Augusta County, Virginia where the first record of land to him was dated April 15, 1748. His will was proven in Augusta County on May 19, 1761. Lily died in Washington County, Virginia. They had thirteen children; 8 sons and 5 daughers. The sons were all Revolutionary soldiers.
