16. Isom Burton OSBORNE was born in 1823 in North Carolina. He died on 6 Feb 1895 in Tazewell Co., VA. He was buried in 1895 in Richlands, Tazewell, VA. Isom married Maria Maizie PHIPPS about 1843 in Grayson Co., VA. [Parents]
Isom B. Osborne (Oldest son of Ezekial Osborne and Elizabeth Taylor).
The 1850 Tazewell County, Virginia census has the following listing:
Osburn,Isham 27 M NC
Mary 22 F NC
Nancy 6 F VA
Adeline 4 F VA
Jessee 1 M VA
Since this family is the same as Isom's, I am confident that this was just a misspelling of the first name, and probably even the last name. William Riley, born 1852, signed his name as Osborne on his marriage license. The 1840 Tazewell County, Virginia census does not show this Osborne family (Ezekial/Isom). Therefore, they apparently migrated to Tazewell County some time between 1840 and 1850 (See notes on Ezekial)
According to the Tazewell County 1870 and 1880 census, Isom, along with his second wife, Nan and famiy, was living in the Maiden Springs area of the county. His occupation was listed as farm laborer. His birthplace was listed as North Carolina. According to information passed down from previous generations, they came from Ashe County, North Carolina.
Isom is buried in the Jones Chapel Cemetery which is located between Cedar Bluff and Richlands. According to the inscription on his grave marker, he served with the 23rd Virginia Infantry, C. S. A. Actually, according to his war records, he served with the 23rd Battalion of the Virginia Infantry.
The below is an e-mail message from Barbara Osborne of Colorado Springs CO:
Ron,
According to the pay vouchers we have for Isom which I haven't as yet compiled and sent to you, Isom enlisted 9-14-1861 in Smythe Co. as a Private, Co. E, 23 Batt'n, Va. Inf. by Capt. Buchannon. At the bottom of the pay voucher it says: This company formerly served as Co. L, 50th Regiment VA Inf. The 23rd (also known as the lst as Hounshell's and Derrick's) Battalion VA Inf. was organized Jan. 15, 1862, with 5 companies A thru E and reorganized May 21, 1862. Other companies were added until April 1, 1863 when the battalion consisted of 8 companies A to H. I don't have every month 11 and 12, 1862 says he was sgt until the 17th of Oct and then (looks like the word is dress or desert as private?) However they must have kept him because he was paid as a private on these Company Muster Rolls until he was captured at Bells Grove, Strasburg Oct. 19. 1864. Prisoner of War Roll says at Harper's Ferry, W. Va., captured by Gen. Sheridan's forces. Sent to Point Lookout, MD., Oct. 24, 1864.
He was released May 14, 1865 according to the Prisoner of War Records, "on taking the oath of Allegiance", returned to Smythe Co. Va. He enlisted as Isom, but some of the muster rolls have him as Isham, one has Ison, and some have notations by the pay officer that Isom and Isham are the same person.
