My mother grew up on a hillside farm in Eastern Kentucky but did not like farming.  When they heard about a coal boom in Jenkins, she and her cousin Lucinda Smith left Hindman and went to Jenkins.  The Consolidated Coal Company had started mining in the Cumberland Mountains.  They had seven mining locations known as Number 1, Number 2, Number 3, etc.  My Daddy , George Hines, had come to Jenkins, Kentucky from Holston, Virginia to work as a blacksmith in the Number 4 shop.  This was the trade he followed for various mining companies for most of his adult life.  Mama's friend, Edna Patton, introducted her to Daddy and they all went on a date together.  Mama and Daddy continued seeing each other and were soon married (September 22, 1913).  They moved into a new company house at Jenkins.  Daddy was now working in the blacksmith shop at Number 5 mine.  I and my sister, Blanche, were both born in Jenkins and continued to live there until 1929.  This was the year that my grandfather, Thomas Hines, died and my father moved back to Holston to take care of the farm until the estate was settled.  I can remember swinging in a swing at Jenkins when I was very young and looking at the beautiful mountains. My Mother liked living in town and was very reluctant to leave Kentucky for Virginia.
