"Frederick and Patty Andrews Mays are going to be first time grandparents!
Their son Erick and his wife Tara are expecting a baby in December.
We are all so excited for them!"

What great news, Cheryl!
Cheryl's brother, Fred, is a member of the Class of '60, and Patty is from the Class of '61.
Congratulations to you all!

From Billy Turner in TX:

"Thought you would like to know that on May 3rd
I was re-elected Mayor of Ovilla receiving 85% of the vote.
What a tremendous vote of confidence it was to receive
such a high percentage of the votes cast.
The last few months have been filled with meetings,
speaking engagements, etc., but I have always found time
to keep up with my friends from NNHS via your e-mails.
Thank you for all of your hard work on our behalf."

Congratulations, Billy Turner (still one word)!  What fabulous news!!!

From Pam Smith Tomczyk in IL:

"I wanted to let you know - as I know you send out
mails to a broad populous - that Dave (Arnold) and I
have decided, for a number of reasons, to get married in 2004.
We are planning an outdoor wedding (maybe even at NN Park!)
because we want everyone who wants to to be able to come.
Afterwards we would like to have a big celebration.
Trust me, it won't be anything really formal -
just people getting together to be happy.
In the meantime, Dave and I are relishing our engagement.
I have to say it is so much fun to be so in love at this age -
especially with a man like Dave.
 Life just keeps getting better.
I think you feel the same way as life advances -
and I wish the same sentiment for all our classmates and friends.
Part of the increasing joy has come with 'finding' so many people again -
especially some that have become very special to me."

Thanks for the update, Pam!
The year 2004 has a
nice ring to it to me!
We're excited for you and looking forward to being there with you.

   I couldn't agree with you more about the joy of finding so many old friends all over again.
What a delight!

From Bruce Spigel in CO:

"Just wanted to let you know I will be moving back to
Virginia Beach sometime in April.  Looking forward to
the beach!!  It would be my pleasure to help with the
reunion committee if needed.

"Wanted to let you know, Grandson #2 was born Sunday
March 30th, to my daughter and son-in-law in Annapolis
Md.  The baby was 4 weeks early and both baby and
mother are great.  As a fluke I had found a flight to
Norfolk on Saturday and flew in to look for a place to
live for my upcoming move.  My cell phone rang in the
middle of the night and I was able to get to Annapolis
in time.  The kids were shocked that I was there as
they thought I was in Colorado.  The baby is Sheldon
Hollis Padgett, six pounds six ounces, eighteen
inches.  ISN'T LIFE GREAT!!!!"

Yes, it is.  Thanks, Bruce!

From Van Rowell in NC:

Mattie and I had a great Christmas and got a nice after Christmas present on January 23rd.  Our new baby grandson came a little early.  The proud mother is our younger daughter, Allison.  He (JD- short for James David Wightman) was born 1/23/03.  He weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces and looks just like me.  Mattie took a week off from teaching and stayed with Allison night and day for the first week.  The baby is now about 3 1/2 weeks old.  Here are a few pictures of the baby (right after he was born). See if you can pick out the one with "good looking baby", "ugly old man".
By the way, my name is "Papa".

From Linwood Wright in Hampton, VA:

"I have yearbooks '56, '59, '64, '68, '70 & '71.
 These annuals have not been written in.
 I also have years '61, '62 & '63 with some writings in these.
If someone graduated in these years they are welcome to them."

This is an incredibly generous offer from Linwood, as these Anchors could be offered to the highest bidder on eBay, but he only asks that "they go to a good home".

The '62 Anchor has already been awarded to Marsha Rice ('62) of Newport News.
Congratulations, Marsha, and thank you again, Linwood!

For those of you with interest in the other yearbooks (preference given to members of the senior class represented, of course) please contact the Webmistress at NNHS65@nc.rr.com, and I'll connect you with Linwood.

THE HARTY FAMILY REUNION IN ALBERTA, CANADA THAT NEVER WAS!

From Carol Buckley Harty in Fayetteville, NC:

We didn't want the reality of the fact that the 19 of us were not going to be together for the holidays this year interfere with our plans.  So my son, Dale, created a virtual reunion photo of us and pasted us all together on a backdrop of the LDS temple in Alberta from Randolph and Brandy's trip this fall.

From L to R: Randolph Harty and Brandy Beger, J.D., of St. Louis, MO; Dale, Adrienne, and Nathaniel Harty of Fayetteville, NC; Becca, Mary, Andrew, Rachel, Lewis, and Elizabeth Harty of Livingston, IL; Paul, Carol, and Joshua Harty of Fayetteville, NC; and Tommy, Bethany, Emeline, Brent, and Jacob Harty of Springfield, OR.

From H. P. Lucas in Yorktown, VA:

"I'm happy to report the reunion committee spent in real dollars a total of $266.72 for the picnic.
Donations totaled $250.00.  Net cost of all that food-fun-& fellowship = $16.72.
This leaves us a balance of $562.69 to be used for start up funds for our 40th reunion
to be held the third week of October 2005.
So be sure to load that date up in your palm pilots and be ready to do some shagging!!!

"The reunion committee will begin preparation meetings the third Thursday of the month
at Joe & Mimma's restaurant in Yorktown.  These meetings will begin in January 2003.
Starting time will be 7:00 PM; anyone interested in joining us please let one of us know.
 We want this reunion to be the best of ALL TIME reunions ever. So let the creative
juices begin to flow!!

My turn!  My daughter-in-law, Bethany, just sent me these pictures of their family.  They were taken on August 9, 2002 at Camp Baker, near Florence, Oregon, where our second son, Brent, has been Director of the Cub Scout Resident Camp all summer as part of his job as an executive with the BSA.  For the closing day of camp, Brent asked that I mail him out the British and French costumes I had made for local celebrations each year from 1976 to 1989.  The smaller redcoat uniform was originally made for Brent.  Funny how time flies!

Janice McCain Rose has some GOOD news to share with us during these troubled times. Over the weekend she played two rounds of exceptionally good golf. In fact, she won the 2001 Club Championship (Ladies Flight) at the Chesapeake Golf Club!!! This means she has her own reserved parking spot with a sign with her name on it for an entire year.....which means, no matter WHAT is going on at the club (outside functions, wedding receptions, etc.), she will ALWAYS have a parking spot! Additionally, her name will be put on the Club Trophy at the club, and she was presented with a 12" x 14" wall plaque.

Way to go, Janice!

Congratulations to all of you, and a heartfelt appreciation to Henry for his gracious generosity in sharing the treasure of memories!

Please, if any of you happen to encounter any Anchors from our school years, whether at yard sales, auctions, or used book stores, please snap them up and let us know, so that those who have lost theirs may purchase it back from you. They would be most grateful.

March 25, 2001 - APOLOGY

This is a blanket apology to all of you whom I've managed in my own inimitable way to offend. Considering the extraordinary lengths to which I travel to avoid giving offense to anyone for any reason, I have a remarkable "gift" for offending practically everyone practically all of the time. I think chances are excellent that I managed to hurt, annoy, irritate, bother, or otherwise tick off a veritable plethora of you this week alone. And as usual, I am quite unaware of what I may have said that caused it. Please accept my sincerest apologies, and for future reference, please remember that while I truly do love and adore you all, I give new meaning to the term, "clueless". Thank you. ~ Carol

DOUBLE - NICKLE BIRTHDAY REUNION!

We all had such a splendid time at our 35th reunion, we decided we couldn't bear to wait five more whole years before seeing one another again. Therefore, come fall of 2002, we shall gather once more to collectively celebrate our 55th birthdays! Stay tuned for further updates. Hey, wait a minute! Isn't age 55 considered in some circles to be a senior citizen? That can't be right! I'm still just a kid!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SPECIAL NOTICE
Special notice to all former NNHS band members! Van Rowell is seeking to organize a reunion of all band and auxiliary units such as flagtwirlers and color guard members who served during the glory years of Mr. James P. Wilson.
If you have any interest in such a reunion, or know how to contact others that would, please email Van at evanderhr@aol.com.
You are listening to "New York, New York", at the suggestion of Christopher Jason Holman, currently serving with the U.S. Army in Germany. Thanks, Chris!
New York, New York
Start spreading the news
I´m leaving today
I wanna be a part of it
New York, New York.
Vagabond shoes
are longing to stray
And step around the heart of it
New York, New York.
I wanna wake up in the city
that doesn´t sleep.
To find I´m king of the hill
top of the heap.
My little town blues
Are melting away.
I´ll make a brand new start of it
In old New York.
If I can make it there,
I´d make it anywhere
It´s up to you
New York, New York.
I wanna wake up in the city
That doesn´t sleep.
To find I´m king of the hill
Head of the list,
Cream of the crop
At the top of the heap
My little town blues
Are melting away.
I´ll make a brand new start of it
In old New York.
If I can make it there,
I´d make it anywhere
Come on, come through
New York, New York.
