VA 800  not currently assigned
Previous VA 800's: VA 800: Appeared in 1929, from the WV line above Monterrey down to Bess (below Covington). This overran original VA 395 and part of VA 39. In 1930-31, VA 800 was extended south to Potts Creek. In July 1933 this was renumbered in its entirety to VA 18. Today it is most of VA 18, plus US 220 north of Covington

VA 801  not currently assigned
Previous VA 801's: VA 801: Appeared in 1929 as a renumbering of the original VA 141. It ran from US 11 Natural Bridge to VA 14 Natural Bridge Station. Oddly, this was also US 60's routing, so VA 801 was an exception to the multiplex rule with US Routes. Perhaps it was anticipated that US 60 would be re-routed. US 60 was rerouted, but not until July 1933. VA 801 became VA 249 at that time. Today it is part of VA 130. VA 801 is not labeled on any official map that I have, but it is mentioned in the CTB minutes.

VA 804 (curr VA 39) Millboro Springs to about 4 miles north (new routing) 2. 10 miles N-S surrounding McDowell (an expansion of original VA 803). In 1932, the southern piece was renumbered as part of VA 804. The other piece became VA 269 in July 1933. Today they are SR's 678 and 654.

In July 1933 VA 804 west of MIllboro Springs was changed to be a part of VA 501 #2 (part of VA 39 today). VA 804 north of Millboro Springs became part of VA 269 in July 1933 (part of SR 678 today).

Comment: Pocahontas Pkwy. Toll road that is shown on all VDOT state official maps since 1996 as I-895. However, the road opened as VA 895, the highest current state route number. If they weren't going to give it the interstate designation they should've just made an extended VA 150. Much more information on VA 895 can be found at Scott Kozel's website

VA 896-1009  never assigned

VA 1010  not currently assigned
Previous VA 1010's: VA 1010: Created in March 1924, running from VA 10 Jonesville south for 2 miles. In 1927, VA 1010 was extended south 8 miles to Blackwater. Previous VA 1011's: VA 1011: Appears on the 1928 Official Map, running from VA 10 (curr US 301-US 460 Bus) Petersburg east to Hopewell. In 1929, VA 1011 was renumbered as VA 408. Today it is part of VA 36.

VA 1012  not currently assigned
Previous VA 1012's: VA 1012: Appears on the 1928 Official Map, running from US 117/VA 10 east of Norfolk (curr US 58-VA 165-VA 166) southeast to Princess Anne. In 1929 this was renumbered as part of VA 502. Today it is part of VA 165. VA 135 - 1941/42

VA 1013-1140  never assigned

VA 1141  not currently assigned
Previous VA 1141's: VA 1141: Created in 1923, running from VA 114 (curr VA 72-83 jct) Clintwood to Pound. This was renumbered as part of VA 121 in 1929. Today it is part of VA 83. I first saw this a year ago on my 1928 Standard map and thought it was a typo. When the 1923 Rand McNally map I got recently also had it on the map, plus a statement saying "Virginia routes from 10 to 1141 are shown on this map," I have to believe this was real. Apparently Virginia was so strict with its spur system, that a 11x route had to touch VA 11. Since this did not, instead of VA 118, which was available in 1923, they made it a VA 114x spur. This has to be the first 4-digit route in the country. VA 1141 (1928)

VA 1142-3110  never assigned

VA 3111  not currently assigned
Previous VA 3111's: VA 3111: Appears on the 1928 Official Map and is the highest route number I am aware of in Virginia. It was a very short stub from VA 311 (curr VA 54) to Hanover. In 1929 this was renumbered as VA 421. Today it is part of St. Pauls Church Rd, near modern US 301. VA 3111 (1928)

Creation: Appears in traffic count documents starting in 2003, as the state route designation for the Colonial Pkwy.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Not posted
Comment: The Colonial Pkwy is shown in the traffic count as being maintained by the Park Service. Not sure why we had to jump out to 9000x to designate these situations.
VA 90004
From: I-66 Falls Church
To: Dulles Airport
Total Length: 16 miles
Creation: Appears in VDOT traffic count documents starting in 2003. Segments referred to as VA 90004 were previously called part of VA 267. VA 90004 is the free Dulles Access lanes in the median of the toll VA 267.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Not posted
Comment: VA 90004 is for access to the Dulles Airport only. A hefty ticket awaits you if you try to use it as a way to circumvent the VA 267 toll road.
VA 90005
From: VA 235 Mt. Vernon
To: I-495 at American Legion Bridge at Maryland State Line
Total Length: 23 miles
Creation: Appears in VDOT traffic logs and also some Fairfax County mileage tables since 2003. VA 90005 is the George Washington Memorial Parkway's designation, and VA 90005 is also on VA 400 Washington St. in Alexandria.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Not posted
Comment: With the VA 90005 designation, VA 400 acquires a useless multiplex, on paper anyway.
