A 24 hour National Public Radio (NPR) station serving the Richmond area with 60%classical, 10%jazz and 30%NPR programming. WCVE started operations in 1988 after a long battle with Channel 6. You see, channel 6's audio frequency is just below the low end of the FM signal (87.7). After studies showed that having an FM station in Richmond on 88.9 would not interfere with Channel 6, the go-ahead was given for WCVE. Richmond's non-commercial classical station used to be WRFK at 106.5, but that switched to a commercial station when WCVE was created. WCVE is owned by Central Virginia Educational Telecommunications along with it's sister station WCVE (channel 23) and WCVW (channel 57). Its studios on Sesame Street in Richmond. WCVE is only station in the Richmond market to use the RDS feature (displays...'WCVE NPR') for car radios. WCVE has filed for a construction permit for a 20,000 watt transmittor.

WDYL

Website: www.y101rocks.com
Internet Audio Stream: www.streamaudio.com/listen/cox.asp?station=WDYL_FM
Facilities: 367' 4 kW
Service Designation: FM Full Service FM Station / Class A
Transmitter Site: 37° 26' 21" N 77° 25' 57" W
Frequency Background:
This staion plays about 75% modern rock, 25% Rap and Pop music. Y-101 filled the alternative radio "gap" left by the September 1998 departing of the late great 106.5 the Buzz. I would like to see this station boost its power. However, it is doubtful the FCC would permit such a request due to DC101 being on the same frequency as this station. This station went dark in mid-1999 but returned to the airwaves in October with an alternative rock format as Y-101. This used to be "smooth jazz" WSMJ until September 1998 when religious WDYL, which used to be located at 105.7 and 92.1 previous, moved here. Was also contemporary Christian until October 1999. WDYL used to be owned by Hoffman Communications but was purchased by Radio One and then bought by Cox. WCVE started here on a 'temporary' basis for 19 months before its permanent home at 88.9. I've got a 1988 videotape of WCVE-TV Simulcasting WCVE-FM 101.1 before signing off the air for the night. There has been talk of Clear Channel possibly buying WDYL from finacially strapped Cox. If this is the case, it could mean the end of Y-101, and quite possibly the end of an alternative station in Richmond. It could also be the entrance of a Clear-Channel owned country station in Richmond.
WRXL
102.1
Format: Rock
On-Air Positioning: XL-102

Facilities: 790' 20 kW
Service Designation: FM Full Service FM Station / Class B
Transmitter Site: 37° 36' 52" N 77° 30' 56" W
Frequency Background:
A longtime rock station. Studios on Basie Road in Richmond. 102.1 first signed on in 1947. It used to sport the WRNL calls when it was owned by the Richmond News Leader/Richmond Times Dispatch which became Media General. WRNL and WRNL-AM (910) were, at one time, top forty stations that gave WRVA some serious competition. In 1973, WRXL came to exist, and with it came the rock format. Up until recently, it used to be 80% 70's and 80's rock and 20% modern rock. It was remodeled, and in 2001, with clear channel's default "rock" logo and a revamped staff, XL-102 now plays a 50/50 mixture of 70's and 80's rock and modern rock. Though Y-101 usually just beats XL-102 in the ratings, I pledge my alligence to XL-102 until Y-101 boosts their signal and gets the rap/pop off their station. Plus, nothing wakes you (and your neighbors) up at 7:00 am faster than a 1980's heavy metal song comming from your clock radio.

Their current studios are on Moorefield Park Drive in Richmond. 103.7 started out in 1961 as WFMV 'Fine Music in Virginia,' with 10,000 watts operated by Professional Broadcasting, Inc. They were the first stereo station in Virginia. WFMV kept the classical format until 1971 when WRFK, took the WFMV format on 106.5. This worked out and 103.7 became WEZS-FM, a very profitable station under the management of Connie Golden. The WFMV library was donated to WRFK. Grete Dollitz's program, 'An Hour With the Guitar,' was originally on WFMV and, after more than 30 years, is still produced on WCVE-FM, and is the longest running local radio production still on the air.

WTVR bills itself as "The South's First Television Station." WTVR is owned by Raycom Media. Channel 6 located on Broad Street in Midtown Richmond is the South's first TV station. WTVR signed on April 22, 1948, the first TV station granted a license south of the Mason/Dixon line. Their tower at 1,049 feet above sea level was the largest freestanding structure in the country at that time, and now it stands as a familiar Richmond landmark. The tall tower helps WTVR reach more viewers than any other TV station in Central Virginia spanning a region that reaches Fredericksburg to the North, Westward beyond Charlottesville, east into Hampton Roads, and south into North Carolina. WTVR was Richmond's only TV station until 1956. In the early days it was a CBS affiliate but lost that to then WRVA-TV (Channel 12) for a while; it became an ABC affiliate. However WTVR returned to the CBS fold in 1960. Was owned for several decades by Roy H. Park Broadcasting. Studios on West Broad Street in Richmond.

On January 8 2001, the "FOX Richmond News at Ten" expanded its news broadcast to one full hour. FOX Richmond is currently the only news station in Richmond to provide a latenight, hour-long newscast. WRLH signed on in 1982 as a general entertainment independent station. He sold 35 WRLH to Times Mirror Broadcasting in 1984. From 1984 to 1988 WRLH went through several owners but was modestly profitable. In 1986 WRLH became the Fox station. In 1988 Act III bought Channel 35. They wanted to be the only Commercial UHF in town so they bought Channel 63's programming and 63 agreed to either go dark or change formats. They chose to go dark. Channel 35 became the only viable independent in town. The station was sold as a corporate deal to Abry Broadcasting in 1995.
