| Note: Faint blobs in the sky at intervals above the harbor. Each blob is the faint outline of a barrage balloon. Each was tethered by steel cable to anchored work boats, referred to as 'Lighters'. Their purpose was to present a nearly invisible hazard to attacking aircraft. Gas in the balloons was explosive. Lightning storms would require some replacement of balloons, due to explosions from lightning strikes. |
