Descendants of Valentine Rinehart

FIRST GENERATION

1. Valentine Rinehart died in 1792 in Frederick Co. Maryland. Bob Pruett found the will of Valentine Rinehart in Frederick Co. Maryland in early November of 1999. This will mentions his wife Barbara (Barbry) Rinehart and their son George Rinehart. We also have the will of Conrad Henshew that mentions his daughter Barbara Rinehart and her son George Rinehart. George Rinehart was the only Rinehart in Tazewell county Virginia in 1800, so there is no doubt this is the right line for our Rineharts.

He was married to Barbara Henshew (daughter of Conrad Henshew and Cathreine Unknown) Unknown. Barbara Henshew died about 1820 in Tazewell Co, Virginia. Valentine Rinehart and Barbara Henshew had the following children:

2. Elizabeth Rinehart was born in Possibly in Maryland.

She was married to Frederick Sorries in Possibly in Maryland.

3. Catrin Rinehart was born in Possibly in Maryland.

She was married to Unknown Shaul in Possibly in Maryland. Unknown Shaul was born in Possibly in Maryland.

4. Christenor Rinehart was born in Possibly in Maryland. Christenor was probbly named for her grandmother, Christine Henshew.

She was married to Unknown Snowfer in Possibly in Maryland. Unknown Snowfer was born in Possibly in Maryland.

5. George Rinehart died in 1830 in Tazewell Co. Va.. He was born in Tazewell Co. Va.. George Rinehart first married Hannah Sebert. Hannah died around 1817 in Tazewell Co. Va. and George married Patsy Nuckles on June 1821.
Bob and I are very proud to have found the parents, one set of grandparents and five sisters of George Rinehart in November 1999. This is apparently something people have been looking for over fifty years to find. We are happy to be able to share this with those who want the information.

George Rinehart signed a petition to form a new county from parts of Wythe and Russell Counties on Dec. 5, 1798. This new county was Tazewell Co. Va. At this time, he was living in Wythe Co. Va. George didn't move, the counties moved on him and, with his help.

I was surprised to find that George Rinehart would have known so many of Bob's grandparents. The Neels, Brewsters, Suiters and several others. He would also have known the Hagers, Repass'es and Pruetts, as well as the McKinneys, Dillions and many other first settlers in the county.

Bob jokingly says that George lived at the Tazewell Co. Court house. George was appointed constable several times in Tazewell co. He also served on jury duty several times. But, don't let this fool anyone, for on Sept. 27, 1807 George Rinehart and Alexander Sayers were fined 83 cents each for swearing a profane oath in court. We found this in the Tazewell co. Va. court records. This lets us know that George Rinehart had a temper and let it get away from him at times. This is one thing that he passed on down to his descendants of today.

George Rinehart was a Captain in the war of 1812. I think George was a crafty fellow for we know he would have owned more than one horse yet he never paid tax on but one. In one year he paid tax on more than this, but he went back to the one horse later.

In checking some court records, Bob said that George must have lived at the Tazewell Co. Court House for he was a witnessed more often than anyone else.

Martha (Patsy) Nuckles (daughter of John,Sr. Nuckles and Mary unknown) was born in 1801 in Va.. We have the deed made in 1836 where Hugh Tiffany Rinehart and his wife Julinana and William Coleman and his wife Martha Coleman, she was 'Patsy Rinehart', sold land to Thomas Perry in Tazewell, Co. Virginia. The land borders that of John Rinehart. They were paid $800.00 for this land.

This proves beyond a doubt that John G.W. was the son of Martha, Patsy, Nuckols and George Rinehart, for she and her new husband William Coleman would not have had to sign for Hugh Tiffany Rinehart to sell his property as he was twenty three or four years old at this time, but John G.W, was only fourteen and would have needed the signature of his mother and Step-father. George Rinehart and Martha (Patsy) Nuckles had the following children:

6. Mary Rinehart died on 18 Sep 1848 in Cumberland Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. She was born Noiv. 29, 1758 in Frederick Co. Maryland.

She was married to John George Weaver about 1778 in Maryland. John George Weaver died on 23 Sep 180 in Baltimore County Maryland. He was born on 2 Jan 1757 in Maryland.

7. Barbara (Barbary) Rinehart was born in Frederick Co. Maryland.

She was married to Daniel Erter in Possibly in Maryland. Daniel Erter was born in Possibly in Maryland.

THIRD GENERATION

8. John G.W. Rinehart was born in 1822 in Tazewell Co. Va.. John G.W. Rinehart was the son of of George Rinehart and Patsy Nuckels who were married in 1821. John G. W, was born in 1822. I think he was named John for the father of Patsy's father, John Nuckles.

We know that John joined Company G of the 190 th. Virginia Militia Of Wyoming Co. Va. This company was disbanded after three months and he joined another company. what Company was a mystery until Betty Sue Croy found him. He was captured and was an exchange prisoner, but by this time he was in such a run down state that he died soon after the war was oven, if in fact he didn't die sooner.

John G.W. disappears in 1870 census, and the children are living with Julia Ann McKinney Rinehart who has married Luke Graham in 1866. John was in the same company with two other future g grandfathers of mine as well as several great uncles.

John was very active in local politics in Wyoming Co. apparently following in his fathers footsteps.

I'm sure I will always continue looking for more information on John. I have garnered some of his personality and he would have been a very interesting person to talk to.

Julie Ann McKinney (daughter of Joseph Floyd, Jr. McKinney and Martha Dillion) was born in 1825 in Tazewell Co. Va.. Julia married Luke Graham in 1866, so we can assume that John was dead at this time as she gave her marital status as single. Actually, she would have been a widow. But then, Julia gave her name as Rinehart in 1880 Raleigh Co. census, and she had her single children living with her at that time. Julia had a child by Luke Graham, Charles, who was most often known as Charles Rinehart during his lifetime. Charles was killed when he fell from a moving train in Cable Co. WV and bled to death. John G.W. Rinehart and Julie Ann McKinney had the following children:

12. Hugh Tiffany Rinehart died March 30, 1903 on Wednesday in Ohio. He was born Nov. 1, 1813 on Monday in Tazewell Co. Va.. Hugh Tiffany Rinehart was born on a Monday, Married on Thursday and he died on a Wednesday. Just some useless information.

He was married to Juliana Godfrey 21 Nov 1833 on Thursday in Tazewell Co. Va.. Juliana Godfrey was born in Tazewell Co. Va.. Hugh Tiffany Rinehart and Juliana Godfrey had the following children:

13. Matilda Rinehart was born in Va.. We found Anderson Rinehart who married in Tazewell Co. Va. and the only person we can figure that could have been his parent was Matilda Rinehart who married James Thornton in 1836. Anderson was married in 1854, so he very well could have been her son. There just isn't anyone else who would fit into this time frame.

She was married to James Thornton 8 Sep 1836 on Thursday in Tazewell Co. Va.. James Thornton was born in Tazewell Co. Va.. Matilda Rinehart and James Thornton had the following children:

14. Rebecca Rinehart was born in 1814 in Tazewell Co. Va.. I found Rebecca in September of 1999. If one just looks at the marriage license, it means nothing, but if you know the history or this family and how the were involved, then immediately, you know that she is the daughter of George Rinehart and Hanna Sebert.

Rebecca must have had a strong influence in her family and a force for good for she moved with her daughter Mildred and her son-in-law Joseph Floyd McKinney to Beards Fork and the place where Rebecca lived is still known as"The Becky Mills Place".

She was married to Robert Mills on 28 Apr 1832 in Giles Co. Va.. Rebecca Rinehart and Robert Mills had the following children:

15. Nancy Rinehart was born in 1800 in Virginia. Nancy was married in Giles Co. Va. I was quiet surprised to find her there, but as Rebecca was also married in Giles Co. and they both married Mills. They lived in the same area on the mountain, only Nancy lived on the Mercer Co. side while Rebecca lived on the Wyoming side. Wyoming Co. and Mercer Co. in the mountains was like a little community. I list Nancy as a daughter only because she will not fit in anywhere else, and she too carried on the naming of her children after relatives. This is inconclusive, but it satisfies me. I suggest if you are interested you check the records available on her.

She was married to Samuel Mills in 1833 in Giles Co. Va.. Samuel Mills was born in 1795 in Virginia. Nancy Rinehart and Samuel Mills had the following children:

FOURTH GENERATION

16. Minerva J. Rinehart was born in 1845 in Va.. She died on 5 Dec 1908 in Wyoming Co, W.Va.. She was buried Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Barkers Creek, Wyoming Co. West Virginia. We found the marker of Manerva Rinehart by accident while visiting cemeteries in Wyoming Co. West Virginia. She is buried in the Mt. Pisgah church yard cemetery where George Washington Shrewsbury and his wife Martha Malinda Graham are also buried. This cemetery is located on Barkers Creek on a small hill.

She was married to Lewis Blankenship (son of Lewis Blankenship and Mary Unknown) Sept. 29, 1864 on Thursday in Wyoming, Co. WVa.. Lewis Blankenship was born in 1843 in Mercer Co. Va.. Minerva J. Rinehart and Lewis Blankenship had the following children:

17. Martha Ellen Rinehart was born in 1847 in Tazewell Co. Va.. She died Feb. 20, 1933 on Monday in Matoaka, WV.. She was buried George Washington Cemetery in Top of Springtom Mountain, Springton, West Virginia. Tom Cook remembers Martha Ellen, our great grandmother when he stayed with his grandmother, Amanda Cook. He remembers her as a sweet little lady who layed in the bed sick as he played with sticks in her room. He also remembers the day he was told that she had died.

In life, Martha Ellen must have been full of herself. She smoked a corn cob pipe, and had a very hard time lighting it. She would burn up three to four matches because she couldn't stop talking long enough to light the pipe. I am told that this trait has been carried down to her great granddaughter, although I don't smoke a pipe.  

She loved to joke with people, and also loved to get "one" on you. If anyone is interested, I have a story that tells a lot of what she was like. Martha Ellen was another lady who was very active till late in life. Up to the time she got sick with cancer, she could, and did squat in the floor and jump back up. This is hard for me to do, I don't know how she could do it into her eighties. It is rare to find women who can do the things our ancestors did, and so late in life. They were made of sturdy stuff.

My mother often talked of Martha Ellen, her grandmother, and of how she never let her back touch a chair and would not let them "slouch" while sitting in her home. My mother was made to spend the night with her grandmother and didn't want to for Martha Ellen was a firm task maker. My mother would whine around wanting to go home until Martha Ellen would tell her to "get yourself on home". Mother would only get spanked and sent back. Soon she learned to keep her mouth shut and just stay. I am sure Martha Ellen knew this would happen when she went home and probably just giggled, waiting for my mother to get back.

She was married to William Thomas Meadows (son of William J. Meadows and Mary "Polly" Armstrong) April 5, 1866 on Thursday in Wyoming, Co. WVa.. William Thomas Meadows was born in 1844 in Monroe, Co.Va.. He was buried George Washington Cemetey in Top of Springtom Mountain, Springton, West Virginia. He died June 12, 1925 on Sunday in Mercer Co. W.Va.. Martha Ellen Rinehart and William Thomas Meadows had the following children:

20. Hugh Green Rinehart was born in 1853 in Mercer Co. Va.. He died on 8 Oct 1888 in Barkers Ridge, Wyoming Co. WVa.. Hugh was one of several men who put his property up as bond for Abram Garretson during Abram's murder trial for killing James Henry Cunningham. Hugh G. was shot and killed by George Rinehart McKinney.

21. Erastus G. Rinehart died Feb. 12, 1883 on Monday in Wyoming, Co. WVa.. He was born Jan. 27, 1854 on Friday in Wyoming, Co. Va.. Erastus was killed by a tree falling on him in 1883. He was only twenty nine years old, and had only been married three years.

70. George W. Meadows died April 17, 1960 on Sunday in Mercer Co. WV... He was buried Cunningham Cemetery in Bluff Mountain, Mercer Co. WV. He was born Feb. 3, 1881 on Thursday in Wyoming, Co. Va.. George and Virgie Lee are buried in the Cunningham cemetery on Bluff Mountain above Dott, WV.
I remember my grandfather as being a very hard worker. He not only had his family to care for, but his grandchildren and some great grandchildren. He also took care of my mother after my father was killed. He saw to it that her garden was always plowed and ready to plant and often helped her plant it. He had our coal and wood before we needed it for the winters. All my mother had to do was ask, and he would do for her, but rarely did she have to ask him. He was this way with all his children. He had a crippled hand from a saw mill accident, but he never let this stop him from helping anyone in need. I look at the pictures of my grandparents and their children and It is easy to see that they were well provided for by the was they dressed. He was a kindhearted man and an excellent man to know.

George wasn't a man to let anyone take anything from him if he thought he was in the right. There was a time he lived on this farm, and Henderson Shrewsbury said the house was on his property about a foot, and planned to take it from him. My grandfather got a bunch of men together and during the night they moved everything out of the house, jacked it up and moved it down over a hill so there would be no doubt it was on his property. Curtis Mayford Shrewsbury says he was a young boy at this time and remembers helping to carry the things out of the house. He also remembers that George was so mad that he even dug up the fruit trees he had planted and took them to George Washington Shrewsbury's farm and replanted them. This was all done in one night. The next day Henderson came by to give George an eviction notice, and found the house moved. I can remember that my mother spoke of Henderson as "Old Hen". In fact. I didn't know what his name was until I started doing the research, for this was what all the family from all sides called him. Henderson was a first cousin to Virgie Lee Cunningham.
My grandfather was one of the best hunters in the mountain, so I hear. There was one last deer left in the mountains, and George and Willis Monk decided they were going to get it. They built a blind for Willis to sit in while George took a cow bell and chased the deer toward him. As he moved closer Willis could hear his cow bell and getting himself prepared, Willis shot the deer. Arlie Monk tells us that was the last deer in the mountain, and that it took about twenty years, before they gradually started coming back. No deer were seen until around 1930 to 1935. I'm sure the Monk and Meadows families enjoyed every bite of that deer.

George loved to fox hunt, and was noted as one of the best at this too. He was also a good tracker. In fact, I think my grandfather was one of the best "mountain men" of his time. He also had a kind heart. During the flu epidemic in 1918, one of my grandmother's cousins was sick. Two children in this family ( Henderson Shrewsbury's family) had already died and George said he wouldn't let them loose the third one. He sat up with the young daughter for several nights bathing her to keep her temperature down and saved her life.  George wasn't a fancy man and never got above his raising. He remained an humble and caring man till the day he died.

He was married to Virgie Lee Cunningham (daughter of James Henry Cunningham and Sarah Jane Wimmer) May 17, 1899 on Friday in Mercer Co. WV. Virgie Lee Cunningham was buried Cunningham Cemetery in Bluff Mountain, Mercer Co. West Virginia. She was born Feb. 12, 1883 on Monday in Mercer Co. WV. She died Jan. 31, 1959 on Saturday in Princeton Mercer Co. WV. Virgie Cunniingham was a very sweet and kind person. I remember her as always being very passive and never speaking back, and I never heard her argue with anyone. She was a hard worker all her life, taking care of her children and a lot of her grandchildren. It is easy to see why George Meadows fell in love with her when you see the picture of her as a young girl, and it is also easy to see why she fell in love with him. One thing I would have wished for them would have been to have more time for themselves as they grew older.

He died Oct. 8, 1930 on Wednesday in Mercer Co. WV. There are so many nice things that could be said about James Marion Wimmer. He had to be the best father that ever lived. He never raised his voice in anger, and was very tolerant of young people. His home was always open, and the table was always covered with food that was just waiting for the young people who visited to "dig" in. On this table was anything and everything one could want, and he expected you to eat all you could hold. He had a car ( a fairly new one ) that the children and  grandchildren could take at will. He let the grandchildren take him to visit his relatives, then they could take the car and come back for him after they had finished "running" around. He was content to wait hours for them to come back for him, yet only ask if they had a good time. He saw to it that they had enough money to visit a movie or eat out. How nice if we could all have lived in such a home where love overflowed, and indulgence was a common practice. Marion was a devoted son, and cared for his Mother till her death. She had to be responsible for the kindness he gave to others so generously.
I have found one fault with Marion, if in fact it was a fault. By today's standards it wouldn't be considered as such, but at the time it was. Marion loved the women, but one has to wonder if this could be helped as it seemed to be a trait of the Wimmer men going back into the seventeen hundreds.
The Wimmer men have never been the only ones to love women, but some of them did do their share of it, and having said this, I must add that not all Wimmer men were prone to run around.  I for one, would have loved Marion to death for many reasons, as a lot of us would. Margaret Shrader and James Marion Wimmer had the following children:

Macie L. Shrewsbury (daughter of William Henderson Shrewsbury and Arminta Elizabeth Shrewsbury) was born in 1910 in Mercer Co. WV. Without the knowledge Macie had of who was buried in the Wimmer Cemetery we restored in 1997, we would not have known where so many people were buried there. We certainly do thank her for having such a good memory and sharing it with us to help make the Cemetery as complete as possible.
Macie also shared several stories with me about my Dad ( Andy Nelson Sigmon ), which are in short supply for me. She attended a Party on the mountain as a young girl and my father was also at the Party. I am going to guess it was around the year of 1924/25. Someone blew out the lights ( the only lights at that time were oil lamps) and one of the girls ask. " What was Moses doing when the lights went out" ? My Dad replied, " Standing in the corner with his shirt tail out". The girls got together and told Maudie Shrewsbury to go over and ask my Dad what Moses said when the lights went out, she did, and he gave her the same answer. Maudie came back very upset that they had set her up for this insult. The girls were shocked that my father would say something so shocking to and in front of a bunch of girls. One will find it hard to believe that something so naive could be insulting to girls considering that today, nothing seems to be insulting.
Another cute story from Macie: She went to a Party, again on the mountain, and a Mrs. Shrewsbury had baked a "Guess Cake". A Guess Cake was one baked with a secret something inside and the young people would pay a dime and get to guess what was baked inside the cake. The one to guess right, won the cake. Everyone had spent all their dimes, so the lady told them to just guess. Basel Shrewsbury knew what his mother had baked the cake and as he was "Sweet" on Macie, he slipped up to her and said, " Guess Allum". She did, and won the cake. "Big Fred' Shrewsbury was at the party and said," Someone told her". I can still hear Macie laughing when she tells me this story. West Virginia. As a young child and older, I can remember my Mother was always telling me about our family. I can remember her taking me to the "Mountain" where all our families were buried and showing me who was buried where. Once, when I was seven, she took me to the George Washington Shrewsbury Cemetery and showed me where my great grandparents were buried. At the time all I wanted to do was play with all the other children. I often wish now that I had listened to more of what she had told me, but was surprised when we started our research at how much came back to me. So, she got more into my head than I thought. I am grateful I had a mother who was interested, but I could have known so much more if I hadn't been too busy to listen to her. She would be very proud on this book.

She was married to Andy Nelson Sigmon (son of John William Sigmon and Sarah "Sadi" Elizabeth Pritchard) 29 Mar 1928 on Thursday in Bristol, Va.. He was born June12, 1907 on Wednesday in Dott, WV. I have spoken to a lot of people who remember my Dad, and no one has ever had an unkind word to say about him. He was one of those rare people who was always ready to do anything to help others in a time of need. He was a coal miner and was killed while walking to Matoaka to get a cab for Springton, WV. where we lived. He was working in Kingston, WV. He is buried in the Cunningham Cemetery on Bluff Mountain at Dott, WV.
He was a wonderful Son, brother, husband , friend and father. When my Uncle Lowel Meadows was sick and it came to my father's attention, he walked from Springton, WV. to the mountain to check on him, and finding him in critical condition, my father walked off the mountain and got a cab to take him back to get Lowel. Lowel lived so far in the mountain that the cab couldn't get in to him, so my father carried Lowel about two miles to the road and laid him in the back seat. He took him to our home and called the Doctor. The Doctor told my parents that if he could have gotten to Lowel two to three days sooner, he could have saved his life, but he died the next morning. I have to wonder why my father wasn't told sooner.

The few memories I have of my dad I wouldn't trade for any amount of money. Brookie Fay Meadows and Andy Nelson Sigmon had the following children:

It is hard to write about someone you admire and respect, or at least it is for me for I can become long winded, especially when there are so many nice things one can say about that person.

She always seems to go that extra mile for you, like when we were restoring the Wimmer cemetery in 1997. We worked from April 9th. until in late October, and one of our most often visitors was Lucille and her Mother Imogene. When she visited us she always s just happened to have a "snack" and something to drink in her car for us. We always took lunch, but when you are lugging trees and throwing them outside the cemetery, you can work up a large appetite.

Also, if Lucille hadn't saved all the things Fanny left her, a lot of the information we now have, would have been lost.  We want to thank Lucille for finding someone who had visited Masa Ann Wimmer and remembered seeing her when she was alive. She told me several times we should go visit Stella Doyle and gave us her telephone number. I am so glad I listened to her.
