Morning Breaks
By: Kenneth R. Cabrieto

           I woke up this morning,
Saw the sun beaming through my blinds,
And for a second I could hear those "morning sounds."
           A few birds,
People opening and shutting car doors.
           The starting of their engines.
I lay in my bed and just looked up at the ceiling.
           Then everything just got quiet.
           I closed my eyes again.
I thought of how wonderful my life was.
           Sure I had school,
So of course that meant homework,
           I had bills to pay.
Too many appointments to keep that I didn't want to keep.
           Going to the hospital.
We both know I hate hospitals.
           That also meant more bills.
           I have those dreadful neighbors.
The one's whose cat uses my front yard as his litter box,
And then walks all over my clean car,
Leaving dirty footprints on my windshield.
Then I have to wash my car again.
I’m really not too fond of doing that either.
As soon as I get out of my driveway,
Some bird will mark it as his own territory.
I don’t even know why I bother to keep washing it.
           It’s never clean.
           Then the silence leaves me.
I can hear the sirens from the firehouse behind my neighborhood.
It’s amazing that I get any sleep at night.
           Maybe I complain too much.
With all of these things I gripe about,
           Life is still great.
           My life is still great,
Because I have you in it.
