Chapter 71

The meal itself was delicious. Brian wasn’t his usual talkative self. But what else was new?
“Are you ready to go?” he asked, anxiously.
I nodded. ‘Its like he can’t wait to get rid of me. Well, if that’s what he wants… that’s what he’s going to get,’ I thought.
We walked outside. “Look… Brian?” I told him.
He stuffed his hands in his pockets and looked at me nervously. “What?”
“We need to talk.”
“Now?... can’t we do it later?” he wondered, looking at his watch.
“No,” I told him sharply, annoyed. “This can’t wait. But don’t worry, you’ll probably be happy with what I have to say. I don’t think we should see each other anymore. It’s not working out.”
His eyes nearly jumped out of their sockets. “What? Why?”
“Well… this is the first time we’ve seen each other in months… your calls got more scarce as time went on… and even when you did call, they were thirty second conversations…”
“I’ve been really busy…”
“I know. I understand how your schedule is. But then there was this weekend. I was so happy to see you! And you didn’t even act like you cared that I was here. You had all this other stuff to do… and you didn’t even want me to come with you or anything…”
“But Erin…”
“And you haven’t wanted to spend anytime alone with me. And you barely talk to me. And when you do, you don’t even look me in the eye. You’ve got something else on your mind… and you consider whatever it is… and everything else… more important than me. And that’s fine, its your decision,” I rambled. “But its my decision that I can’t go on like this. Going such long periods without seeing you and then you barely talking to me?” I became aware that I was starting to repeat myself. “I’m sorry… it hurts too much… so I think this is for the best. Maybe we were just never meant to be.”
I finally looked up at him, wanting to see how he was taking this. I was fighting back tears.

I don’t know what I expected to see on his face. But I did expect him to be sad, at least a little. I mean, we’d been through so much. But he was laughing.
