Febuary, 2003: I Missed A Day

Saturday, Febuary 1st, 2003 (12 am)

Work continues. Today, we were standing around and a steady stream of water started falling out of the middle of the ceiling. Ha!
About a year ago, when I was about to start college, I was going to quit my job. Then, for some reason I didn't.
I think I might be going to a different college next year, in which case I really will quit my job. But, maybe I'll go to the same college. And if I do I'll either be living at home or an apartment (as opposed to the dorm I'm in now). If I'm in an apartment, I'll have actual bills to pay and I'll be dependent on my job. If I'm dependent on my job I think I'll either except it or hate it a lot more. Who knows. We'll see what happens.

Sunday, Febuary 2nd, 2003 (12 am)

Today (Saturday) sucked, it sucked a lot. Days like today suck. Days that suck, suck. This sucks. I think I should go to bed and put this sucky day behind me. Blah.

Sunday, Febuary 2nd, 2003 (Later)

Today sucked too, but not as much. When it got really busy, the managers disappeared for a couple of hours, so we kept running out of stuff. At one point, my coworker and I almost walked out. Probably should have, but didn't. Oh well. At least I don't have to go back for a few days.
Side note: Looking at the entry I made a year ago, Febuary, 2002, I notice I seemed to be going through the same thing, I had had a horrible weekend and almost walked out. Now, a year later, I seem to be repeating history. Weird.
Later: There are a lot of webpages out there by people who hate their jobs. Skimming across a few, I realize I actually have it pretty easy. I don't have to put up with horrible managers or terrible working conditions. I just don't like the nature of my job. And since I'm still young I have the freedom to find new work, and if I can't find better work, I still have the freedom to quit and live with my parents. A lot of people out there are stuck living paycheck to paycheck in sweat shops under the pressure of slave drivers. Eh.

So this past weekend was unremarkable.

Friday, Febuary 14th, 2003

Two points of interest:
1) Today a lady walked up and when I started talking to her, she said, "oh God, oh god..." and ran away very scared.
2) A story in the paper today revealed plans to destroy Ridge and build a super market. A fucking super market. God damn it. Bastards. A super market? Yea, like we don't have enough of those all ready. Before they demolish the place, I'm going to go take a piece... A super market?

Tuesday, Febuary 18th, 2003

So, right, this weekend a huge snow storm hit the area dumping more than two feet of snow in some areas. It all started Friday afternoon and by 7 o'clock that night, people were getting kind of worried. Everyone went out to their cars to cover the windows and what not. My boss, though, had locked his doors and they were frozen shut. Sucks for him. He actually went around and asked everyone if they were ok for driving home and let a bunch of us leave.
After I dug out my car, I headed home. The normally 12-15 minute drive took twice as long and little did I know that once I parked, I wouldn't be leaving for a long time. That night the storm raged on and by the next morning I was officially snowed in. It was Sunday and for the first time ever I called out of work. I'd never missed a day up to that point, but it was physically impossible for me to get to work. I was talking to the manager on the phone and she said that the other manager had already called out and that her car did a complete 360 when she trekked to the theater, so I guess I'm justified in missing a day of work. Still, it's the first time I ever missed a day. Oh well, better alive than dead.
Also, I was completely snowed in with my family since I couldn't get back to my dorm. This sucked at first, but in the end it was pretty cool.
And, so, here I am. A note on symbolism: Saturday when it started getting icy, an old man came up to me and told me I should "try to leave work early" and that morning my parents told me I should "try to leave work early" and then! I happened to notice a quarter made the year I was born! All of these were signs I should heed caution, so I did, and I'm ALIVE!!!!! Moral of the story: watch out for the signs!!!! That is all.
