NAMESAKE for the Colledge was Henry, eldest son of England's King James I. Latin for "Henry" is "Henricus", pronounced as "henREEcus". Name, when Anglicized is spoken as "henRYEco". A zealous Protestant, young Prince Henry was greatly beloved by the leaders and members of the Virginia Company. Died at age 17. Name lives today: 1611 Citie of Henricus; Cape Henry (at Ocean); Henrico County (on north side of & downriver from Richmond), &, of course, the revived Henricus Colledge (1619)®. |
