UTT's INTERVIEW

By John Sebastian

Are you a fan of the MTV Bangkok Jam show? Then I bet you're familiar with this gorgeous guy. CONTACT has the opportunity to accompany him while he's in Indonesia. Curious? Read on!

About Himself

He's a Eurasian son of an English mother and a Thai father, Gregg Utt has an exotic physical appearance. Born as Uttsada Panichkul in Los Angeles on March 9, 1974, he spent most of his childhood and boyhood in America. Since he had been reared in a western lifestyle for years, the host of the MTV Bangkok Jam show claims that he couldn't understand the way Asians think when he returned home a couple of years ago.

"Now I'm proud to be Asian! Asians tend to think long and hard before they make any important decisions. They consider other people's feelings before giving any comments on something. That's very kind and polite." he additional name of Gregg came because of the difficulty non-Thais had in pronouncing his Thai name. Uniquely it was taken from one of the boys' names in the famous TV series The Brady Bunch. "I have many names. Outside Thailand, people call me Gregg. In my country, some people like to call me Utt, others love Utta and Grutt, the combination of Gregg and Utt. But I prefer Gregg!" (Whatever you say Gregg...!)

..."Now I'm proud to be Asian! Asians tend to think long and hard before they make any important decisions. They consider other people's feelings before giving any comments on something. That's very kind and polite." ...

Becoming Gregg Utt

"I'm just like other guys," says the University of Assumption alumnus about how it feels being a famous star. Gregg started his career at a very young age as a model, an actor, and a commercial star. He took a job at a local Thai TV station as a music host and used it as a stepping stone to grab the opportunity to become an MTV Asia VJ in 1998.

"Being an MTV VJ was something I would die for. I enjoy it. I have the chance to meet big stars and interview them, to travel all over the globe to see exotic places and meet different kinds of people. The only problem is that I have to work a full schedule all the time. I can hardly meet my friends. I sometimes want to hang out with my buddies, but it seems I'm getting busy time after time."

So far, Gregg has visited our country three times, and CONTACT has been quite lucky to meet him whenever he comes. "I do like Indonesia. Everyone is so friendly. Smiling faces are everywhere!" ven though he has already become a celebrity, Gregg is low-key, and CONTACT has witnessed this. When we were spending a day together, he always asked if it was OK before doing anything and tried to greet people or fans every time he met them. You know what? Gregg is so polite that he even takes off his shoes when entering a house! What a guy!

His Dreams

"I'm still young and have a lot to do," says this energetic guy, who presently likes to listen to Blink 182 and No Doubt . Gregg is now working on his official home page and finishing the shooting for his one-year soap opera contract. He has also started thinking about and is preparing stuff for the future.

"I just bought a house and started paying for the installments routinely. So, I will be well-prepared when the time comes to move to a higher level of my life," admits Gregg, who also wants to continue his studies. "What I really want now is a holiday. I want one month off to take a nice long break, a bit of a breather and enjoy my days off." (Well, you deserve it man...!)
