Van Buren County, Iowa

Martha "Patty" Tracy Manwill died 20 Jan 1847 in Van Buren County, Iowa.
SNYDER CEMETARY BONAPARTE TOWNSHIP, VAN BUREN COUNTY, IOWA SECTION 11
This is known locally as Gabby Cemetary, as the Gabby's were the last ones buried there, and were land owners at the time. However, it was known earlier as Snyder Cemetary. It is described in the WPA writer's history, published in 1940 as the Mormon Cemetary, on Reed's Creek, and on the Gabby Farm (See below.) This may be true, but there was a Mormon Burying ground nearer the mouth of Reed's Creek, with no stones. It is also called Old English Cemetary, and it is said that a group of English people camped near it. This cemetary is fenced, and is on the Crandon Paper Company tree farm. It is 3 miles east of Bonaparte, You drive into the tree farm on a trail for one- quarter mile. The cemetary is to your right, going in. It is almost completely overgrown with tall trees, and is a tangle of fallen trees, brush, etc. Trees have fallen over tombstones, and only 9 stones were standing. Five were completely buried under soil and leaves, and the rest lying flat. The area was many times larger than the area occupied by the present stones, so there may be unmarked graves, or other buried stones. Copmpletely unkept. From WPA Guide Series: 1940: The Mormon burying ground is on the Gabby Farm, 2.5 miles east of Bonaparte, near Reed's Creek. During the Mormon exodus from Nauvoo in 1846, a temporary settlement was established in the region as a winter headquarters. Those who died during the winter were buried in the small cemetary established for this group. Many of the grave markers are still standing. After talking to local residents, there is a feeling that the cemetary used by the Mormons was the one on Reed's Creek closer to the river. (See Reed's Creek burial ground.) There is much disagreement on this point, some feeling that the Gabby Cemetary is a Mormon Cemetary and others feeling that there is a mix up, due to the fact that there was a cemetary near the mouth of the creek and that people have confused the two.
