Logan Banker, Merchant Dies
After Illness 0f 2 Years

LOGAN -- John H. Anderson, 80, pioneer, Logan merchant, former
mayor and president of the First National Banking Co., Logan, died
Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in the family home, of a lingering illness. He had
been ill for about two years.
A lifelong resident of Logon and Cache Valley, he had been active
in civic and L.D.S.
Church circles. Mr. Anderson served as mayor of Logan in 1910-11,
was a pioneer in development of the sugar beet industry in Cache County,
and is considered one of the oldest independent merchants in northern Utah.
Born in Logan
A son of Johannes and Johanna Olsen Anderson, he was born Sept.
24, 1864, in the family home, 162 E. 4th North, and had lived there with the
exception of a few years, throughout his life.
He was educated in Logan public schools and when 18 years of age,
spent 27 months as an L.D.S. missionary to Sweden. After returning
home, Mr. Anderson was an officiator in the Logan L.D.S. Temple
three years.
His first business venture was as clerk and later branch manager of
the Z.C.M.I. store in Logan. When that closed, he established the John
H. Anderson & Sons department store, which now is operated by two
of his sons. He also established a general store at Mendon.
In 1902 he was elected a director of the First National Banking Co.
and was vice president five years before being named president.
Mr. Anderson had been active throughout his life in Logan and
state Republican party circles and was a long-time member of the Logan
Chamber of Commerce. He was interested in flowers and was president of the
Logan Flower Garden club for a number of years.
In addition to his early church work, he was bishop of the Mendon
L.D.S. Ward from 1900 to 1903; bishop of the Logan Fourth L.D.S. Ward from
1913 to 1918; president of the Swedish L.D.S. Mission from 1925 to 1926;
president 20 years of the Cache L.D.S. Stake home mission, and was a
member of the Cache Stake high council 40 years.
He also was president of the Logan Scandinavian society 20 years,
worked throughout his life in the Logan Temple and held many other minor offices
in various L.D.S. organizations.
Married in Temple
He married Annie C. Eliason, a native of Logan, Nov. 18, 1885, in
the Logan L.D.S. temple. She died April 26, 1945.
Survivors include John and Joseph Anderson, Logan; Mrs.
Charlotte A. Larsen and Lt. Merrill B. Anderson, Salt Lake City;
Woodruff H. Anderson, Springville; Mrs. Luella A. Hickman,
Berkeley, Cal.; Dr. Melvin E. Anderson, Idaho Falls, Ida., and Mrs.
Marie A. Curtis, Cokeville, Wyo.; 23 grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the W. Loyal Hall
Mortuary.
