Today of All Days!

By Mary Nesmith

The day had started out nicely, but quickly turned bad. First, Mike, Micky, Peter, and Davy realized that they were out of the bare essentials for food, and were unable to have a decent breakfast. Then Mike had to inform the rest of the group that they had no money to spare for anything more than condiments because if they didn't pay their rent on time, Mr. Babbitt would throw them out, and he was serious this time. To forget their troubles, they decided to drive to the park, and that had been fun. But they returned to the car only to find that the keys had been lost or stolen, and there was no way for them to get home but walk, and it was going to be a long walk. So, without any other options, they began the long, silent walk home. Then everything went from bad to worse.

"Ok, now if anyone follows, you're dead!" The leader of the robbers yelled into the bank from the doorway as he shot off a round from his tommy gun. Then he turned and exited the bank.

Peter had been walking behind the rest of the guys, his head hung down in sorrow, and if his head was hung down in sorrow that just goes to show that it must have been a really bad day.

Mike turned around and stopped to look at Peter. "Hey, Pete, ya ok?" Mike asked in a concerned tone. Micky and Davy turned to see what was wrong with Peter.

"Oh, it's nothing. Really." Peter answered, his voice almost monotone.

"Oh, come on Big Pete, we're not that bad off." Micky placed a reassuring hand on Peter's shoulder.

"Yeah, everything will be ok, right Mike?" Davy added.

"Um, yeah. Peter, Davy's right." Mike responded as he noticed that Peter was looking somewhere else. "Hey, what are you looking at?"

"Those guys. They're running out of that bank over there." Peter answered, the rest of the group looked over to the bank.

"Hey, boss, those guys over there saw us without our masks!" One of the henchmen called from the trunk of the getaway car.

"What!?!" The boss of the group got out of the car to see what his henchman was talking about, and sure enough, he saw four young boys looking right back at him. "Aw, nuts." He grumbled. "Mugzy!" He called as he sat back into the car.

A very tall man came over to the boss. He was at least 6'7 and 300 pounds, but he was dressed in a three-piece suit, just like the rest of the group, and he had a fedora to match. He was obviously the muscle of the gang. "Yeah, boss?"

"See those kids?" The boss asked as he pointed out the window of the car to the Monkees.

"Yeah." Mugzy answered.

"Get them and bring them over here, there coming with us." The boss ordered.

Before the guys knew it, a very big, very scary looking guy was dragging them across the street.

"Hey! What's the big idea?" Micky asked.

"Yeah, what do you think you're doing?" Davy added.

"Where are you taking us?" Mike asked their captor.

"I want my mommy!" Peter cried.
