WILDERNESS CHALLENGE Do you have what it takes?
18 thru 25 years old
We have two groups:
Tepee:
Tepee is an impact group that is designed to introduce students to our program so they may become proactive. Although Tepee is an orientation, they must master the requirements of this level to move up to Hogan (next group). In Tepee they will hike and hold three groups per day, more if necessary. They are able to move to Hogan as soon as they are able to have a minimum of five proactive hikes. They need to accept being in the program and be willing to take responsibility of their lives. The main purpose of this level is to get you in both the physical and emotional shape to accomplish your "Adventure Quest". Accountability, Dependability, and the ability to remain Proactive are traits we hope to develop in this group.
Hogan:
Hogan is the advanced group. There are many of privileges that can be earned in this group, i.e. shelters, games, free time, privileged food, special supplies, and other fun activities. With every privilege comes a responsibility. Students will have the opportunity to master bow drill skills, different types of shelter building, adventure games, travois (a better method of carrying supplies), hiking, and most importantly, Self-discipline, Self-esteem, Teamwork, and Self-motivational skills. There are several requirements while in this group. Traits that we hope to develop in the students are Self-confidence, Leadership, Excellence, and most of all INTEGRITY, in this group level.
"What is Adventure Quest?" " And when can I go on it?"
Your "Adventure Quest" is earned by completing both Tepee and Hogan groups, however the field director and/or field coordinator may feel that you are ready at anytime while in the Hogan group. You will then be transported to the upper mountain range where you will be reliant on all that you have learned in the program. Building shelters, fishing, swimming, hiking, making fires with bow drills, compass courses, reading maps, basic survival skills, etc. This Quest will be one to two weeks in length. Prior to your gradation ceremony you will need to accomplish an "Adventure Quest" customized to your needs.
The quest is designed to show the students ability to achieve any and all goals using the tools supplied to them by the program. Upon completion you will receive your "Certificate of Completion of Outdoor Experience" Diploma from "Ashley Valley Wilderness Program".
Levels and why they work
Levels help measure student accountability and also hold them responsible for their actions and current situations. Levels give staff and students a written standard to monitor progress with progressive checkpoints along the way. Living the level system helps us as a program to look through manipulation and to see the true self.
We also teach assertiveness, honesty, self-confidence, work ethics and problem solving skills. The students work their way to completion of the program through a level program. The levels are based on the student learning certain skills, both physical and emotional. When the student feels that they are beginning to meet the requirements of the particular level they go before their group of peers to be "voted up". At this time each peer is asked to give an assessment of how they feel the student is doing. If the student passes the vote of peers they then must pass a "vote up" by staff on transition day. If the student passes the vote of staff as well as the vote of peers, the student will be raised to the next level in the program.
24-hour Supervision- Ashley Valley provides 24-hour supervision. At no time during the course of the program are the clients out of the supervision of staff. Even on your "Adventure Quest" you will be escorted for your inner growth and Safety purposes. All staff are trained in CPR/First Aid and Basic Wilderness Survival skills.
Recreational Therapy- Every day is an educational experience. Each thing that we do throughout the day has therapeutic value. We also have planned activities designed to open the student's mind. You will have the opportunities to fish in the Uintas, rated by many as "the fly fishing capital of the world", and observing some of the wildlife that Utah has to offer.
Having frequent rafting trips along both the Green and the White rivers, you will be able to have fun and work on things like your self-esteem and self-confidence. You will also learn and make use of the motivational skills that we have offered. You will be able to address and solves issues within yourself. Once you complete your "Adventure Quest" you will have answers to more questions than you have ever thought possible. Your mind will open up in many directions because of your accomplishments. You will the see things in a new way. You will be able to define and accomplish your short and long term goals much easier.
