My Thoughts
on Toothpick Length
by Arthur Petersen
(an excerpt from an original email message, sent May 5, 1998)

"According to the laws of relativity, if you accelerate a toothpick to a velocity at or around the speed of light, it would appear to be shorter than it really is. However if you were to travel with the toothpick at the speed of light, then you would notice no difference in the length of the toothpick. A lesson can be learned from all of this. If you are going to build toothpick scupltures, and you need a toothpick to be shorter than it is, then you can either accelerate it to the speed of light (3*10^8 m/s) or you can simply break it in half."
