Queen's Empire
THE QUEEN'S EMPIRE

O, Queen of the Empire
Queen of the Ants;
How old you have grown
In your flamboyance
Just waiting to expire.

You have lived and reigned
For twenty-one years
Thrived and conquered, in all things
Been fruitful, made new heirs,
But now you rest with dusky wings.

As you drift away memory lingers
Back to the rudiments;
A young queen, just left the nest
To start your own settlement
In the ground some where in the forest.

You laid your eggs
They hatched and grew
Then connected tunnel onto tunnel
To extend the mound through
And made the underground your tabernacle.

By the age of eight
Your kingdom, it did expand
And castes were great
With soldiers at more than ten thousand.
A thousand nurses, a hundred drones
And four meters the channels spanned.

A timid smile wrinkles your face
As you remember the times of victory
When rival ants were laid to waste;
Colonies were capsized,
Battles were won,
And so many disasters your kingdom survived.

Now at the old age of twenty-one
With fastened crown and dimming eyes
Your empire's population, probably millions
Ten by three meters, the walls reply,
It's your castle's new dimensions
Yet in one chamber, you wait peacefully to die.

O, Queen of the Empire,
Queen of the ants;
How old you have grown
In your throne room with flamboyance
Just waiting to expire.
