Everyone Must Row with the Oar He Has

It's another week at the Widows Walk, and everyone is talking about personal embarrassment in front of crowds. It seems that the Island is recovering from a visiting hypnotist, who stirred up all sorts of trouble. Kevin upsets Molly with one of his statements under hypnosis, and Daniel loses a million-dollar lottery ticket. But the truth will set you free, and honesty proves its worth yet again.

Everyone had a great time watching the hypnotist show. Under Zabar's influence, Molly was Mae West, flirting shamelessly with another man. Sitting under the lights, Kevin clucks like a chicken, eats a fly, and admits that his "best" kiss was with a girl named Jenny Rabinski. Kevin didn't appear to be upset at Molly's behavior, but Molly leaves in tears with Kevin's "true" confession of love.

The morning of the show, Daniel bought a lottery ticket for friends on the mainland, with unexpected results. Alex, Ruby, Bonita, and Brian have a long tradition of paying $0.25 each for a weekly lottery ticket. What would have been a simple errand turned into a lot of work on the mainland. Upon returning to the island, Daniel delivered Brian's prospectus and receipt, and looked for Alex to give her the ticket. She wasn't in the Widows Walk when he tried to deliver it. So when Ruby and Bonita burst into the tavern with the news that they won the lottery, everyone looks to Daniel to produce the ticket. He can't find it in his pocket, and a search at home yields no results, either. Even retracing his steps all over the island doesn't work.

Meanwhile, planning a wedding creates stress for Kevin and Molly. Kevin has no idea that he mentioned Jenny's kiss, and the battle of the denominations is an issue. Kevin is Catholic, and Molly is Protestant. So where to get married, and by whom? They receive conflicting advice from Daniel and Father Mac, and reach a standstill.

Daniel still can't remember where he put the lottery ticket, so they enlist the help of Zabar. Even with hypnosis, he has no idea where the ticket is. But Zabar leaves him in a state of post-hypnotic suggestion, so that Alex can continue to work with him to find the ticket. The hypnosis will end when he gets a good nap. Impelled to tell the truth when he hears a bell ring, this method creates interesting results. Complicating the issue, Brian was hypnotized at the same time. It soon becomes impossible to tell whether the two men are telling the truth of their own volition, or if they're hypnotized at any given moment. Disaster strikes during a counseling session with Molly and Kevin, when Daniel tells them they shouldn't get married. But at least Daniel and Alex discover where the ticket really is. In a candid interview, Daniel finds the prospectus receipt, and divines that Brian had the lottery ticket all along. But while he's supposed to be under hypnosis, he tells Alex they have an obvious attraction, and he loves her in that blue dress. Flustered, Alex returns to the Widows Walk, and discovers Molly's new dilemma. Alex explains that Daniel was under hypnosis to explain his strange behavior.

In the aftermath of the truth, the lottery ticket holders find themselves at the dump, as Brian threw away the bag with his "receipt." At this point, only he has received direct, positive results from telling the truth. He told a client the land he was selling is worthless, and the client saw it as a salesman trick. He bought the land anyway, despite the fact that the land is on a floodplain. But wading through the dump, a million dollars still eludes the group. With searching, Nub finally discovers the ticket, only to have a bird steal it. And Kevin and Molly finally have a heart to heart talk. Molly discovers that Jenny Rabinski caught Kevin and kissed him against his will, when he was five years old. They agree that they want to be together, no matter how the wedding is handled. So they approach Father Mac with a solution: Father Mac will give the sermon, and Daniel will handle the vows in an outdoor ceremony.

So the islanders end up pretty much where they began financially, but their friendships are strengthened. The group of four gamblers enters the next week's lottery to try again, and Kevin and Molly glow in their newfound happiness. And Daniel gets his revenge on Alex for leaving him helpless under hypnosis. Turns out he had taken his nap before Alex arrived to conduct the interview. So Alex's effort of wearing Daniel's "favorite" blue dress turns into a joke, as she realizes he was stringing her along the entire time. But his jests obviously held truth, and speaking of their attraction sets the stage for future events.
