H.I.M. Emperor Haile Selassie was born Tafari, near Harar, Ethiopia on 23 July 1892. (The date of his birth was Hamle 16, 1884 Ethiopian calendar, this was 22 July 1892, but owing to the omission of a leap-year in 1900 Gregorian calendar, Hamale 16 now corresponds with 23 July.) 1916 Lij Yasu was deposed : in his place Menilek's daughter Zauditu was
proclaimed Empress, with Dajazmach Tafari, now nominated Ras, as Regent
and Heir to the Throne.
A picture of Ras Tafari as Regent and Heir to the Throne On the 2nd November 1930 Negus Tafari became Emperor. Negus Tafari assumed his baptismal name of Haile Selassie. ("Power of the Trinity"). His official title became "Elect of God, King of the Kings of Ethiopia.* *The motto of the Solomonian dynasty. "The Lion of the Tribe of Judah hath conquered", which precedes the name and style of the Emperor in his Proclamations and in other official references, is not of course, a title.
