Step 13: Apply to Law Schools
After taking the LSAT and researching law schools the time comes to apply. Most law schools start accepting applications in October. Some earlier, some later. The deadline for applying to law schools is usually in Febuary. Most law schools use a "rolling" admissions system. They send out acceptance letters throughout the application season. Some schools will have sent out 80% of their acceptance letters before the deadline to apply has passed. It is therefore to your advantage to send in your applications as early as possible. The cost to apply to schools can get expensive. Application fees can range from $30-$75 with most being around $60. Some schools will send you application fee waivers if you do well on the LSAT. Most people apply to two "reaches", two "targets", and two "safties".
LSAC has two very helpful options to help fill out applications. Unless you have a lot of time, patience, and a typewriter, I recommend getting either the LSACD ($59) or the LSACD on the web ($54). This program, a CD-ROM or website version avaliable from this LSAC website, allows you to answer fill out common application questions once and then print out applications or send them electronically.
Because I received a few fee waivers, and because the competition at some schools is so strong, and because there was a 20% increase in LSAT takers this year, I applied to 13 schools:
