The UAE lies at the
north-eastern part of the Arabian Peninsular, bordered by the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia to the south and the Sultanate of Oman to the east and north. To the east
lie the Hajar Mountains; they form a backbone
through the country, stretching from the Mussandam Peninsula in the north, through the
eastern UAE and into Oman. The western interior of the country consists mainly of arid desert with spectacular sand dunes,
interspersed with oases.

The UAE has a coastline on both the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Gulf and is south of
the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The Arabian Gulf
coast is littered with offshore islands, coral reefs and sabkha (salt-flats),
with stretches of gravel plain and desert characterizing much of the island
region.

Culture & Lifestyle |
The UAE's culture is firmly rooted in the Islamic traditions of Arabia. Islam is more than just a religion, it is a way of life that governs even the minutiae of everyday events, from what to wear, to what to eat and drink. Thus the culture and heritage of the UAE is tied to its religion. In parts of the world, Islamic fundamentalism has given the 'outside' world a very extreme, blanket view of the religion. However, in contrast to this image, the UAE is tolerant and welcoming. Among the most highly prized virtues are courtesy and hospitality and visitors are sure to be charmed by the genuine warmth and friendliness of the people. |
