Love on the Ropes: Real Life Couples-Luna & Gangrel

The first time Luna Vachon met David Heath, she bit him.

One would think that Heath-the blood imbibing athlete known as Ganrel-would have enjoyed the nip. But as the two tangled in a ring under the watchful eye of trainer Rusty Brooks-who prepared ot only Heath for the mat, but Boris and Dean Malenko, and Stu and Bruce Hart-the future Superstar was dismayed by the hole in his back.

"He wanted to kill me," Luna confesses. "I was Enemy Number One." Yet at the same time, Heath also craved Luna's companionship.

Luna's family may well be the Kennedys of the squared circle-her father was Paul "Butcher" Vachon, her uncle was Maurice "Mad Dog" Vachon, and her aunt was women's standout, Vivian Vachon-and a few had better understanding of the way the business was operated. "He came to me for advice," Luna says. "And in the shadow of the Watchtower Insane Asylum-the name I have for my family's house in Pompano Beach, Florida-we fell im love."

It was not the first intense relationship for either athlete. David had two sons, David, Jr. and Donovan, and Luna was the mother of two boys, Joshua and Van. She called the brood "the bloodsucking Brady Bunch"

Working the indeendent circuit, Luna became the manager of Heath and Tom Nash, better known as the Blackharts. "The idea for the name came from Bruce Hart (brother of Bret and Owen)," Gangrel reminisces. 'We were supposed to be the darkside of the Hart Family."

All was going well until Heath-under the name, Vampire Warrior-began to branch out, establishing a reputation in Japan and Puerto Rico, among other places. Says Luna, "His head was getting a little disjointed."

Gangrel agrees: "I needed Luna to remind me that the table is round-you meet the same people on the way down as on the way down."

Her words proved prophetic when, in 1992, she joined the World Wrestling Federation, while Heath remained in smaller territories. "It had always been our dream to make it together in this business," Luna says. "He was insecure and jealous, and I'd sit on the phone with him for around six hours, telling him what a great wrestler he was, and that I still loved him."

Then, in 1998-four years after their Halloween arriage-the character Gangrel was created in the World Wrestling Federation. Finally, the couple could enjoy the big time together. But trouble was looming. Luna was fired for losing her temper in the dressing room, and gaining a reputation for a preformer who couldn't get along with others. "I'm a Vachon," she explains, "and I get emotional. But now, I'm the one [who's] insecure, jealous, and keeping him on the phone for six hours. I have to say, though, that he listened to every word. His patience was there. He passed the test."

It wasn't long before the Wrld Wrestling Federation decided to give Luna another chance, and the pair were reunited in the major leagues. "We've come through the flames," she says. "Now, we're rising to the top of the stage. Gangrel has his chalice in hand. And Luna's in love."
