Ajman is the smallest Emirate, with little more than 250 sq km. It is immediately to the north of Sharjah. Most of it is surrounded by the Emirate of Sharjah, but there are also two very small enclaves at Manama and Masfut in the Hajar Maountains. The
latter is a village a hundred kilometers away near Hatta; it has a carpet suq that is popular with tourists. The grand old fort in the center of Ajman evokes a more glorious past; it now houses a museum and is favourite destination for visitors. Archael
ogists have revealed that the town was an important Bronze Age settlement. The creek has long been home to dhow-builders and today one can still see these tradition has been extended to include craft made from modern materials. The yards at Ajman can no
w make speedboats from international competition, and there is a repair yard for modern steel ships.
Increasingly people working in nearby Emirates choose to live in Ajman to benefit from its more reasonable rents and more relaxing quality of life.
Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory
speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.
