The Watcher In The Woods :: Cut Scenes

There was numerous footage cut from the film, especially at the ending. In the original script, instead of Ellie approaching the ceremony, a giant demonic creauture came down the isle of the chapel and wrapped it's wings around Jan, transporting her to it's dimension, where Karen has been trapped for so many years.

Then Jan's mother comes in, searching for her. Meanwhile, Jan is in the watcher's dimension, and attempts to bring back Karen with her. Then, out of nowhere, Jand re-appears with Karen, still the same age as she was when the incident in the film first took place, and she takes Karen to see her now aged mother. They run in the lawn and embrace each other, with Jan in the backround, crying with joy, then Ellie asks where the watcher went to. Jan replies "Home, where ever that is." Then the credits roll. There was also footage cut of John Keller apoligizing to Jan's mother for her disappearance.

The reason that the alternate ending was completely cut and reshot, was because when the film was screen tested with audiences, they laughed at the onscreen demon creature because it looked so ridiculous. So, director John Hough hired another cinematographer, cut the footage, rewrote the ending, and filmed an entirely different version of it.

With the alternate ending, the film ran 100 minutes, but after it was cut and replaced the film only ran 84 minutes. The alternate ending footage was thought to be destroyed, but Anchor Bay Entertainment revived the footage and added the alternate ending footage onto their DVD release. The Disney DVD release also includes the footage.
