TEHACHAPI NEWS - For the second straight year the Warriors fell to Righetti in a tight contest, this time on their own turf in a hard-hitting 21-19 loss on the mountain.

Tehachapi drew first blood in the game when Garrett Coontz hauled in a defended tip-pass at the Righetti 6-yard line in the first quarter. Ehren Ochsenrider was the passer on the completion and later added the extra point to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead.

Josh Strauss scored another touchdown for Tehachapi on a sweep with 23 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The extra point attempt sailed wide, which at games-end proved to be a critical play. Despite the miss, Tehachapi still had the lead going into halftime at 13-7.

Righetti went on a surge near the end of the third quarter with a couple of touchdown passes, vaulting the visitors to the lead with a 21-13 count.

Tehachapi would answer the second score with one of their own, with Kelly Lorenz bursting through the middle of the line of scrimmage for an eventual 60-yard touchdown run with seven minutes remaining in the game. The Warriors elected to go for two on the PAT but the runners feet was tangled just prior to reaching the goal line.

Righetti chipped away at a good portion of the remaining clock to an eventual win.

On defense, Tehachapi was able to get penetration in the backfield with Jonathan Perrien and Louie Olofson registering two sacks apiece, and Derek Lange and Marcus Abarquez also getting quarterback take-downs. Tyler Hack had an interception in the third quarter.

Next up for the Warriors is their final pre-season game of the year this Friday against Stockdale-Bakersfield. The game will be on the road with a start time set at 7:30 p.m.

BRAVES AND INDIANS LOSE CLOSE CONTESTS TO RIGHETTI

The Righetti Warriors edged both the freshman and junior varsity programs this past week, but in both contests the underclassmen teams took away a multitude of positives heading into their final pre-season game and their upcoming league stretch-run. Next up for the Braves and Indians will be contests against Stockdale, with the freshman playing this Thursday and the junior varsity on Friday, both with 5 p.m. start times. For directions to the stadium, log on to www.thswarriors.com.

Junior Varsity:  Righetti 16, Tehachapi 12

Max Clark had 79 yards on 13 carries and Ryan Dalmas had two completions for 31 yards and a touchdown pass to Zach Maravigili, but the Righetti junior varsity scored a go-ahead touchdown with 26 seconds left in the game to escape with a victory.

After going down 7-0 toward the end of the first quarter, the Braves Jesse Olofson caught a beat on a Righetti route at the start of the second quarter, intercepting a pass deep in Coastal Warrior territory and taking the pigskin to the endzone for a score.

Olofson’s presence in the secondary highlighted an overall strong performance by Tehachapi on defense, with John Cramer leading all tacklers with seven tackles, Niko Taliulu and Luke Mears registering four tackles, Luke Papac with three take-downs, and Chris Rush, Matt Santos, Dylan Fralick, Clint Heinzler, Nick Howell, and Dougan Patience having multiple tackle afternoons.

Maravigili also had an interception in the game while Nick Howell had a fumble recovery.

Freshman:  Righetti 7, Tehachapi 0

The Indians endured a six hour round-trip bus ride last Thursday and while they didn’t come away victors on the scoreboard at game’s end they still took away a great deal of positives in a close 7-0 loss to Righetti.

Tanner Etherton, Gabe Goodwin, Cameron King, and Mike Lowder all had multiple tackle nights for the Indians, while Trevon Harris and Tyler Holstrom both combined for over a 100 yards rushing.

The Indians held Righetti scoreless the entire first half, giving up only one score in the third quarter.

In the previous week against Burroughs, Phil Rhodes scored on a 74 yard kickoff return and Trevon Harris scored on a 19-yard speed-sweep on fourth down.

“I’m happy with them.  It was much improved,” said head coach Bruce Schkade. “We just have to get some offensive continuity.  There’s room for improvement but we’re getting better game-by-game.”
