Junior Varsity Braves Locked and Loaded

With South Sequoia League titles won in 2002, 2003, and 2004, the Braves football program has the distinction of a strong tradition on their side in the new century.

Much of that success has been attributed to head coach Ryan Grimes, who is coming into his 13th year coaching football overall, and fifth as the head-man for the Braves program.

Grimes will be assisted this season by brother Jason Grimes, who is in his fourth year coaching the offensive and defensive lineman, and Matt Schneider, who will coach the running backs and defensive backs. Luke Schneider will again be heading up the defensive coordinator position and will look to instill another strong season. Under Schneider’s defensive tutelage, the Braves had six games where only one touchdown was relinquished (or less) in 2006.

All four Braves coaches share the distinction of being successful Warrior alumni players, with Ryan Grimes considered one of the best quarterbacks in Warrior history with 1,020 yards passing and 13 touchdowns in the 1990 season. Luke Schneider and Jason Grimes were also successful utility players for the Warriors in the 90’s, while Matt Schneider was a member of the 1997 12-1 SSL champion Warriors, finishing his senior season with 460 yards and seven rushing touchdowns.

The 2007 Braves will benefit from a couple of players that were called up from the freshman ranks in runningback/linebacker Trent Gardner and lineman Niko Taliulu, younger brother of All-SSL linebacker and current Warrior Alek Taliulu. Also looking to make strong contributions this season for Tehachapi are Ryan Dalmas at quarterback, who threw for 1,026 yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman last season, and John Cramer, who was a dominant defender for Tehachapi at linebacker last season with double-digit tackles in five games.

Back for a second year of Braves football is talented runningbacks Dougan Patience and Max Clark, who both should get a lot of carries this season. Nick Howell, Zach Maravigili and Jesse Olofson are also a couple of other talented backfield threats that could give opposing defenses a new look as the game wears on. Luke Papac is another player who should be an opposing threat for offenses at his defensive line position.

The Braves, who have already had contests against Garces and Los Angeles Baptist, will have stiff tests at home this season against Righetti (Santa Maria) Burroughs, Taft, and Bakersfield Christian while facing road opponents Shafter, Arvin, Wasco, and Stockdale-Bakersfield.
