TEHACHAPI NEWS - A wind gust at 35mph from the southwest made for mountain-like conditions for the visiting Tehachapi Warriors, who took advantage with a road victory over defending Southern Section Division VIII Champion Burroughs, 27-10 last Friday evening.

Tehachapi (1-1), a run-oriented team, caught the Burros (0-2) flat-footed on their first offensive possession by scoring on a 30-yard pass and catch from Levi Lantz to Stefan Bekker. The Warriors later added on a safety in the period when a punt block from Garrett Coontz found the back of the Burrough’s endzone.

Tehachapi Quarterback Levi Lantz out-gained Burroughs gunslinger Troy Spargo in the first quarter, connecting on two passes for 38 yards, compared to Spargo’s 30 yards on three completions. Lantz also recorded a second passing touchdown on the evening, when he found Louie Olofson open for a 24-yard touchdown catch on the Warrior’s second drive of the game. The touchdown was nullified however on a holding penalty at the Tehachapi line of scrimmage.

Warrior Gabe Bressler was the workhorse for Tehachapi on the evening, finishing the first half with 112 yards and 198 overall, scoring three touchdowns overall in the game.

Tehachapi iced the game with ball control on offense throughout the entire third and the start of the fourth quarter, capping it with a two-yard touchdown run to go up 20-10. The drive was an impressive one, with the Warriors starting at their own 11 yard line, eating almost twelve minutes off of the third quarter clock and logging five first downs.

The Warriors got their fourth touchdown of the night after a 24-yard completion between quarterback Ehren Ochsenrider and wideout Franky Rodriguez set up an eventual five-yard touchdown run by Gabe Bressler on a five yard plunge.

Tehachapi finished the contest with 361 yards rushing and 83 yards passing, holding Burroughs to only 157 yards passing and 63 yards rushing.

Tehachapi will take on Righetti in Santa Maria this week. Righetti played South-Bakersfield last Friday night, defeating the Rebels 62-26.

The win against Burros was an impressive one, with Tehachapi not only taking the overall series lead against Ridgecrest 8-7, but the 2006 game tied the largest margin of victory ever by a Warrior varsity team. The other 17-point win came in 1947, when Tehachapi defeated Burroughs 37-20 in the first-ever match-up between the two schools.

Scouting Report:  Tehachapi Warriors (1-1) @ Righetti Warriors (1-1)

Huge game this week against Righetti - Santa Maria, who manhandled South-Bakersfield last week 62-26. Righetti will get a first hand look at the Wing-T offense, while Tehachapi will be tested to the hilt on a variety of speedsters on Righetti's offensive attack.

Look for Righetti to try and establish their running game early, with #40 Kyle Leon and #3 Adam Wilson getting the bulk of the carries after two big nights against Pioneer Valley and South.  Wilson, who is also Righetti's starting quarterback, is an effective scrambler who also doubles up in the secondary on defense for the Warriors. Both will be difficult to contain and Tehachapi will need to keep the lanes contained against these two prolific scoring threats.
