SSL WIDE OPEN AGAIN   Tehachapi gets behind early, Arvin opens up SSL race

PASSING TO VICTORY -  The Bears utilized a strong passing game to take down the visiting Warriors.

Posted 10-29-05

On one side of the crows nest, you have Larry Campbell, Warrior Coach Pat Snyder, and myself in a state of shock on the performance put up by the Arvin offense.  On the other side, you have Brighthouse Network commentators giving praise and surprised positive accolades to the performance of the Bears.

Tehachapi responded with three scores in the fourth and final period, but being down 21-0 at half, and 35-8 in the third quarter, time was against the Warriors...and Arvin's gash on the Mountain Men has opened the wound on the SSL title race, which is now wide open.

Games like the one against Arvin are very dangerous.  For Tehachapi, the emotions of a big win over Taft the week before were draining, and unfortunately it carried through to the contest against the Bears.

You look at the stats, the scores against like opponents, and it can be deceiving. You see a team that lost to Wasco, an opponent that Tehachapi dispatched easily in the SSL opener, 34-7...and your mind ventures to the thought process that victory is in the bag.

However, there is a reason the games are played.  A lesson that Tehachapi knows all-too-well now.

Micky Venagas is a very special player, and you have to give credit to Arvin Head Coach Edgar Mares for not moving away from his best player against Tehachapi.   Ten catches for 132 yards and a second quarter score easily made Venagas the MVP for the Bears on the night.

Adversity can be a positive thing...if you allow it to be.  It hurts that the possibility for an SSL championship could be shared...or even lost.  However, the marathon isn't over.  There may have been a trip along the path with a few scraped knees, but it's far from throwing in the towel.

Shafter this week, Warriors.  You may have lost the lead, but you're still in the race.

MOUNTAIN FOOTBALL VIDEO
Game-By-Game Video Highlights

There's a nice little article on the website on Jerad Romo and Chris Denman, two NCAA Division IA football standouts.  Check it out by clicking here.  Please also note that Jerad and Chris are joined by Jon O'Brien (older brother of current Warrior Tommy O'Brien) and Johnny Sullivan at the University of New Mexico.  Having four former Warriors playing IA ball should make all of Mountain Football feel proud!

Since we're on the subject, pay close attention to where Tyler McCann goes after the Bakersfield College season ends.  Word on the street is that he has garnered serious interest from Nebraska, which if you know Tyler would be a great fit for the former Warrior offensive line standout.

Be sure to check out the Warriors stat sheet at the end of every weekend, which will have the latest and greatest on the defensive and offensive statistics for mountain football.

THSWARRIORS.com PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Matt Deger had one of his best games on the year, registering two sacks in the contest and six tackles, giving him the nod this week.  Tyler Hansen also gets the nod this week for posting a team-high 96 yards passing on five completions.  It could be Hansen's last game of the year pending prognosis on the injury.  Hopefully the results on the ankle come to be good news.

It was a hard-fought battle in the fourth quarter...congrats to Deger and Hansen and the rest of the Warriors for fighting and trying to make a late comeback.

#4 Matt Deger and #8 Tyler Hansen - PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

SCOUTING REPORT:  Tehachapi Warriors (4-4; 2-1 SSL) @ Shafter Generals (3-5; 0-3 SSL)

Things started out good for Shafter this season, firing out the gate with a 3-0 record.  Since then, it's been 0-5 including three gut-wrenching defeats to Arvin, Golden Valley, and most recently, Taft.

#32 Ryan Thompson will be the one to watch for Shafter, leading the team with over 600 yards rushing and 7 TD's on the year coming into the game against Taft.  #2 Mickey Polley is also another multi-back threat for the Generals, having rushed for over 300 yards and also showing some good results in the passing column, with his best game a 97 yard performance against Golden Valley a couple weeks back.  Wideout #3 Grant Nixon is Shafter's main threat in the catching department, catching 20 receptions on the year for 316 yards through seven games.

On defense, Junior Linebacker #33 Elisha Gonzalez leads the team in tackles with 45, and is joined by a solid corps that include down-lineman #55 Brett Couch and #77 Warren Williams, who have combined for 51 tackles on the year and five sacks.

PITCH AND SPRINT- Last season Tyler Hansen (#8) helped orchestrate Tehachapi to 395 total yards rushing to a 34-0 halftime lead.  In the second half, the Warriors called off the dogs to cruise to the win column, 41-7.  Hansen's status in this game is doubtful, but the Mountain Men hope to continue the winning trend this season.

It should be a great game against Shafter and Tehachapi, with the Warriors looking to get back on track in the league title race and the Generals hoping to notch a win before their big game against Wasco in week 10.

Shafter owns an overall 20-19-1 record over Tehachapi, and the Warriors can even everything up tonight.  For a brief history of each of the games that the Warriors and Bears have played each other, click here.  You can also view 2004 Weekly Warrior analysis and 2004 game stats of the last meeting between these two teams.
