D-FENCING THE RAMS    Tehachapi shuts down Garces, despite the injury of many key personnel
Posted 10-08-04

MR. FOURTH-DOWN: Jameson Freymond, stepping in for injured QB Tyler Hansen, converted many 4th down runs, including a score, to help overtake Garces for the second straight year, 21-3.

Sure does feel good coming away from Sam Tobias Field with a win, doesn't it Warrior fans?

The main reason being...we don't get one of those too often in their place.  Ironically, the last time we did win a game on their turf was way back in 2000, when Jerad Romo used the QB option to perfection in a four-TD rushing performance.

Also, what a difference a week of practice makes, especially if you're Jameson Freymond.

After being thrown to the wolves last week against Stockdale, Freymond looked much more comfortable running the offense this week, keying in on a couple of first downs, evening running in a score on a fourth-down and goal to help Tehachapi take the lead for good.  AND...Jameson got Mike Papac involved again in the passing game, hooking up with the senior tight-end for a 2-pt conversion in the third quarter.

Gearing away from offense a little...defensively, in a nut-shell, all all you really have to say is, "where ya been boys?"

This game against Garces was by FAR the best pass defense all year.  Of course, you can credit that to many factors...like having to face Ethan Cubit, Heyo Carpenter, and Garrett Anthony in the previous four weeks of football, but bottom line was the team concept took center stage this week.

No Sean Finley, no Dan Haycock, no Tyler Hansen.  Three key starters out of commission.  But everyone, especially the defensive secondary, stepped up their game.

And here we are...heading into the league schedule with the same record as a year ago, 2-3.

Warriors, there are still some wounds that needed to be licked clean, because there are no guarantees when it comes to the SSL.  BUT, Tehachapi has proven that 2-3 teams can be champions in the sequoia division.

Will Tehachapi be able to repeat the performance of a year ago in this year's league run?

Well, as Garces's announcer would say...

"Stay Tuned, Sports Fans!"

Player of the week honors for the Foothill game go to Levi Kerstiens, Nelson Godschalk, and Trenton Pera.

SCOUTING REPORT:  Wasco Tigers (3-2) @ Tehachapi Warriors (2-3)

With the pre-season officially in the books for 2004, the Warriors can now turn their attention to more concerning matters, a quest for a South Sequoia League Championship.

The path to the title will have a minor road block this week, when Tehachapi (2-3) faces off with Wasco (3-2).

The Tigers have a much more improved team to showcase in 2004, hoping to avenge last year’s season where they finished 1-9 and in the basement of the SSL with an 0-5 record.

Much of the credit to Wasco’s turnaround is the presence of first year head coach Pete Mitchell, who took over for Joey Mayo after the end of last season.

In the stat column, the Tigers’ are led by first-year varsity player and senior Nick Tijerina (#1), who has collected 305 yards and 2 TDs on 59 carries for Wasco, while also catching seven passes for 109 yards.

Quarterback Daniel Hinojosa (#6) and Runningback Leo Rios (#32) are also solid contributors to the Tiger cause, with the complementary backs helping Tijerina out with a combined 371 yards on 68 carries to help establish the three-back threat. Also look for Alex House (#33) and Evan Shulte (#20) to get involved after the two contributed with a touchdown apiece in last week’s 37-6 win over McFarland.

Hinojosa also has been solid in the passing game, throwing for 22 completions and 358 yards in five games. Along with Tijerina, wideouts Michael Samarripas (#3) and Cortney Coleman (#44) usually get involved on the receiving end of Hinojosa’s arm, catching over 200 yards combined.

On defense, Wasco is led by defensive backs Jacob Wallace (#8) and Eduardo Ramirez (#30), while the defensive line should be a strength for Wasco with Benji Pallares (#75) and Baudelio Munoz (#10) having solid seasons on the front-line. Edgar Ortiz (#54) is also back for another season at linebacker and should be involved in many of the plays on defense.

For the Warriors, it will be a new-look Wasco team that they will face Friday night, and should sound off the beginning of a tough five weeks of SSL play.

Prognosis is good for Dan Haycock to be back in the lineup this week against Wasco.  Finley is still doubtful, as is Tyler Hansen.  In a call to arms...that was a freshman (#11) taking snaps for the Warriors late in the fourth quarter against the Rams....Ehren Ochsenrider.  The ninth-grader, who took his first official snaps as a varsity player, can now stitch on his varsity letter at season's end, the first one to have the distinction in Warrior Football since '97's Jeff Pandolfe.  Congrats Ehren on getting your varsity letter!
What a game at East this past week between the Blades and Arvin!  Jose Tamayo, down 39-33, throws a hail mary toward the endzone with the clock at 0:00.  After the extra-point, Arvin steals a 40-39 win on the road against a very solid East team.

In other SSL games, Taft moves to 4-1 with a 46-11 drubbing over Coast Union, and Wasco and Shafter notched wins in their games, with the Tigers downing McFarland 24-0 and Shafter upending South 17-14.  Golden Valley lost to Quartz Hill - Lancaster, 56-7.

Stay tuned next week for analysis of the Wasco game and a preview of the Taft matchup.  GO WARRIORS
