SOUTH OVERCOMES EARLY SCORE, PREVAILS 17-7 OVER NORTH

Posted 07-20-03

Centennial's Jeff Crosby hands off to Liberty's Ricky Henderson, while Garces's Eric Minor and West's Randy Turner pave some running room.

In the bottom of the pile, Liberty's Cole Sorrell scores from two yards out in the second half to put the South All-Stars up, 14-7.

And the final...Kern County Wins!

Things looked like they were going to get ugly for Bakersfield early in the 4th Annual Central Section All-Star game on Saturday (July 19th, 2003) when Buchanan's Deangelo Ramsey hauled in a 82-yard bomb to put the North All-Stars up 6-0 on the first play from scrimmage.

But after the ensuing extra point, that was all-she-wrote for highlights of the Fresno/Clovis contingent, with the Bakersfield All-Stars winning the contest, 17-7.

With 11:07 remaining in the second quarter, West High's Ed Leach scored from seven yards out to tie the game after a Ricky Henderson interception deep in North territory.  East High's Dwight Grupton almost gave South another score before halftime when a Jeff Crosby (Centennial) pass just missed off the finger tips of a diving Grupton in the endzone.

The South team had another chance to score in the first half when Ed Leach ran a 16-yard punt fake off the right hash, setting up a Matt Oliver (Garces) field goal.  Although Oliver connected on the 41-yard try, the referee's determined that the snap was not executed before time ran out, leaving the score tied 7-7 at intermission.

The second half was all Bakersfield, with Eric Taylor (Bakersfield High) setting the tone early picking off a deep bomb intended for Landon Ellis on North's first play of the third quarter.  The momentum would carry to the waning moments of the third, when Cole Sorrell (Liberty) punched in a two-yard TD with 26 seconds left in the quarter, giving South a 14-7 lead.  The final score of the game came off the passing, running, and kicking of Matt Oliver, when the talented quarterback connected on a 12-yard pass to Ricky Henderson and a 13-yard run to set up a 24-yard field goal with 4:30 remaining in the game.

For Bakersfield, Liberty's Ricky Henderson was selected as the South All-Stars offensive MVP, while Garces's Chris White was selected as the defensive MVP and unanimous MVP of the game.
