Economic and Social Council ECOSOC Your chairs for
ECOSOC and UNYMUN are Caitlyn MacAllister and Eric Higgins.
Caitlyn is a senior ad JD High School and has been involved in Model United
Nations for three years and is an officer this year.
This is her first time chairing. Eric is a senior at JD High School and has
been involved in MUN for three years. This is
his first time chairing. Both chairs are
accomplished delegates and are active in many other activities.
This committee
is resolution style. We highly, highly
recommend writing your own resolution, especially if you want to win an award. Research is very important, to ensure that
delegates do research on their own, we have not provided a lot of background with the
topics. We are not just looking for who
speaks the most, but those who have new and inventive ideas, stay within their countrys
policies, and interact with other delegates in a diplomatic fashion. If you decide to write a reso, bring your own
copies (about 50-60.) We are looking forward
to a fun committee with very active debating. Good
luck! No question is a
stupid question, so if you have any, please feel free to contact us. Caitlyn MacAllister

Confronted by
constant conflict and change, the international community responds through the Economic
and Social Council. The objectives of the
ECOSOC are: a) Promote a higher standard of living, full employment, and conditions of
economic and social progress and development; b) Solutions of
international economic, social, health, and related programs; and international cultural
and educational cooperation; c) Universal respect
for, and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction
as to race, sex, language, or religion. [Sub-paragraphs a, b, and c of Article 55].
The forefront of
ECOSOCs role in the international community is to respond in a timely manner to
problems of international significance concerning economics and society. Sustainable Consumption
Sustainable consumption is the use of
goods and services that fulfill basic human needs and better the quality of life, while
not destroying the surrounding environment, in order to provide for future generations.
The growing needs and
wants of an ever-increasing world population require the use of technology and natural
resources. However, progress can negatively
affect the environment because of gas emissions and toxins from industry, and the constant
depletion of natural resources. The job of the ECOSOC, along with
UNEP, is to find a way to preserve the environment for future generations while meeting
basic human needs and improve the quality of life. http://www.un.org/esa/sustdev/conprod/htm http://www.shu.ac.uk/schools/slm/csc.html
Since 1998, the UN has been working on
developing a system of policies to aid the least developed nations, especially in
land-locked areas and island nations in Asia and the Pacific region. The goal is to
improve their economic status and efficiency and focus attention on vulnerable groups in
the area.
Methods have
been used such as promoting trade, investment from other nations, increasing industry and
farming, and acquiring technology like the internet, in those areas and by encouraging
regional cooperation with UN bodies like ECOSOC and WTO.
ECOSOC must also
help improve the lives of the people of those areas who suffer from a lack of education,
jobs, and public services and facilities, especially women who face discrimination and
children. http://www.imf.org/external/np/sec/decdo/contents.htm http://directory.google.com/Top/Regional/Asia/Business_and_Economy/Economic_Development/
