"This is Congressman Roscoe Bartlett.
I am very pleased that the President has indicated his support for a Constitutional amendment to recognize that marriage can exist only between a man and a woman. This is such a tradition in the world, in the Judeo-Christian world for centuries, such a tradition in our country, that I think that it is totally incomprehensible that someone could suggest that there could be a marriage between other than a man and a woman. So I commend the President for supporting this.
I was one the first persons to sign as cosponsors of this bill. I hope that it will have a very rapid trip through the House and the Senate and out to the states where three-fourths of them must ratify it before it becomes a Constitutional amendment.
We've ratified the Constitution by amendments now 27 times. I'm very happy with the hope that this will be the 28th Amendment to the Constitution."
