SWE Minutes from 9-19-05

Upcoming Events
-Beverly Chen speaks, 9-26 during meeting

-Miss SWE pageant, 10-27? @ 7:15 – 9:15 pm

Thai Food Event
-The SWE Thai Food Event last Thursday was a great success
-80 or 90 people showed up
-suggestions for next year: tables for food to have two serving lines, more food
-any other suggestions let us know

Beverly Chen
-next Monday Beverly Chen will speak during the SWE
meeting about organization etc.

Fun Night
-fun night in Big Beckman Friday 9-30 @ 7 pm
-we will have movies and refreshments
-suggestions for movies etc let us know

Miss SWE
-tentatively 10-27, waiting to hear back from Deren (to MC)
-definitely on a Thursday and definitely setup @ 5:30, doors open @ 6:30, pageant @7:15
-will ask for volunteers when sure of date
-need people to help with setup, be bouncers, deal with speakers/sound system, shop for prizes, order pizza, buy soda, track down red carpet, get gifts for Deren and judges, email women faculty to judge (Lindsay when date set), help Jowene and Zane with posters and table tents
-will come up with new questions for contestants during another meeting

Corporate Relations
-Paul Jones and corp. relations office helping us build relations with companies
-at least 10 sponsors will donate at least $500 each to SWE -these donations will cover WEST, and the rest will go to trips
-may arrange site visits with companies that are interested
-corp. relations will look into Imagineering and JPL tours
-during fall break, possibly visit the Bay Area and Sandia and Lawrence Livermore and Google (half to whole day tours), whole trip will be paid for, Lily got names of those interested to show extent of interest (a lot of interest)

National Labs Night
-Monday 10-3 (two weeks from now)
-all national labs will come to campus
-SWE will set up a table and talk about activities and ask for funding
-1:30 pm PCAC pre-meeting reception, need at least one student rep: Lindsay
-2 to 4:30 pm PCAC real meeting with a short speech about SWE: Jamie, Sarah T.
-4:30 National Labs, table in Hixon court: Jamie and Gena
-SWE meeting that day will probably be late and in another place, so check your email for a notice
-someone needs to check for SWE poster for table


Opportunity Day
-Thursday 11-17 @ 4:30 to 8 pm with NSBE and SHPE
-dinner @ 6:30 to 8 pm, speaker, discussions at tables
-purpose: to show companies what we're like and to keep them liking us
-suggestions for something to do before dinner: panels, clinic and student research posters and presentations, artwork, food, engineering challenges with company reps (something we already did in E4?)
-suggestions about speaker: definitely having a speaker but need to find one and a good topic that will engage people afterwards, a new for of Orwin's commencement speech?

Prof Dinners
-Dean Goroff, Lape (says Weds and Thurs good), Martonosi (new math prof), Alvorotto (new CS prof), S. Harris (next semester), Cardenas, Bassman, Orwin, Cha, Bright
-Bassman, Martonosi, and Lape carpool together, so maybe do theirs separately but on the same night
-Thursdays and Fridays seem generally best for us

Other Stuff
-Jamie and Gena will get 3-page report to Lily ASAP
-next week's meeting prob in the Green Room (hopefully with tables), but check in case email says otherwise
